Aspremont-Lynden Castle
Aspremont-Lynden Castle ( nl, Kasteel d'Aspremont-Lynden) is a castle in Oud-Rekem in the municipality of Lanaken, province of Limburg, Belgium. The present castle, on the site of a mediaeval predecessor, was constructed by the noble family of d'Aspremont Lynden, Counts of Reckheim, in the early 17th century, in the style of the Maasland Renaissance. Oud-Rekem
Oud-Rekem is a village in the Lanaken municipality of the Limburg (Belgium), Limburg province of Belgium. The village is considered one of the most authentic villages of Belgium. Since 1994, it is protected as a monument. History Oud-Rekem was first mentioned in 1140 as Radekeim. The village was first a ''heerlijkheid''. In 1356, it became a Barony (county division), barony, and was elevated to county in 1623. During the 16th, 17th and 18th century, the town was located in a heavily contested area. Oud-Rekem was plundered, and had to station troops on multiple occasions. In 1602, the first Defensive wall, walls were erected around the town. Between 1625 and 1630, a second layer of defence was erected. In 1638, a third wall was built in between the first and second. Even though the walls were removed between 1825 and 1836, traces are still visible. Lanaken
Lanaken (; li, Laoneke) is a municipality located in the Belgian province of Limburg. On January 1, 2007, the municipality of Lanaken had a total population of 24,724. Its area is 59.00 km² which gives a population density of 415 inhabitants per km². Lanaken is located on the Belgian-Dutch border, bordering Maastricht directly. In the 2006 census, some 20 percent of the inhabitants turned out to have the Dutch nationality. A number of neighbourhoods in Lanaken is characterized by these immigrants' numerous villas and exclusive landhouses. Lanaken consists of the following villages: Lanaken proper, Rekem, Neerharen, Gellik, Veldwezelt, Smeermaas and Kesselt. Also located in Lanaken are the hamlets Briegden and Herbricht and the old village centre Oud-Rekem. The South African pulp and paper company Sappi operates a large mill on the outskirts of the town.
