Aspidotis Densa
''Aspidotis densa'' is a species of fern in the Cheilanthoid subfamily, known by the common name Indian's dream or Serpentine fern or dense lace fern. It is native to the west coast of North America from British Columbia to California and east to the Rocky Mountains in Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming; there is a disjunct population on serpentine soils in Quebec. William Dunlop Brackenridge
William Dunlop Brackenridge (1810–1893) was a British-American nurseryman and botanist. Brackenridge emigrated to Philadelphia in 1837, where he was employed by Robert Buist, nurseryman. He was appointed horticulturalist, then assistant botanist, for the United States Exploring Expedition from 1838-1842. Originally, the well-known botanist Asa Gray was to be the chief botanist, and William Rich, a Washington, DC socialite and son of an ambassador, was politically appointed as his assistant. However, Gray never went on the expedition due to taking an academic job, and Rich was appointed botanist, so they needed a new assistant. Rich was reportedly of little use on the trip, and Brackenridge did almost all the collecting and serious botany work. Brackenridge was assigned to the U.S. Ship Vincennes. ''Aspidotis'' is a small genus of leptosporangiate ferns known commonly as laceferns. Most species are native to slopes, ridges, and rocky outcroppings, primarily in California and Mexico, although one species included in the genus by some authorities is widely distributed in eastern Africa. Description Members of ''Aspidotis'' are small ferns, with shiny, tufted fronds generally less than 35 centimeters long (although ''A. schimperi'' may be larger). Fertile leaves have false indusia formed by the leaves' inrolled margins, which partially conceal the spore-bearing sori. Taxonomy The taxonomy of laceferns has been considerably refined since they were first described in the late 1800s. Pteridaceae is a family of ferns in the order Polypodiales, including some 1150 known species in ca 45 genera (depending on taxonomic opinions), divided over five subfamilies. Cypress Island is the westernmost part of Skagit County, Washington and is about halfway between the mainland and offshore San Juan County.
