Aspidiotus Capensis
''Aspidiotus'' is a genus of armoured scale insects. It includes several agricultural and horticultural pests. ''A. destructor'' was originally blamed for a massive die-off of coconut trees in the Philippines which began about 2009. It has been involved previously in die-offs in Indonesia. In July 2014, following a detailed morphological review, scientists announced that instead ''A. rigidus'', was to blame. ''A. rigidus'' has few natural predators in the Philippines which leads to the surging infestation. Aspidiotus Destructor
''Aspidiotus destructor'', the coconut scale, is a species of armoured scale insect in the family Diaspididae, found in many tropical and subtropical parts of the world. It is a serious pest of coconut and banana, and attacks a range of other fruiting trees and ornamental plants. Description All but the first instar nymphs live under the protection of a waxy test or scale and remain in one place. First instar nymphs have legs and move about looking for somewhere to settle. Second instar and adult females have rounded, flattish tests up to in diameter. They have no eyes or appendages, and their soft yellow bodies are visible through the translucent test, giving them the appearance of miniature fried eggs. Males have smaller, more elongated tests, and pass through a pseudo-pupal stage before metamorphosing into reddish, gnat-like insects with eyes, antennae, legs and wings, but no mouthparts. Distribution ''Aspidiotus destructor'' has a global distribution in tropical and su ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Sugi
''Cryptomeria'' (literally "hidden parts") is a monotypic genus of conifer in the cypress family Cupressaceae, formerly belonging to the family Taxodiaceae. It includes only one species, ''Cryptomeria japonica'' ( syn. ''Cupressus japonica'' L.f.). It used to be considered by some to be endemic to Japan (see remark below under 'Endemism'), where it is known as . The tree is called Japanese cedar or Japanese redwood in English. It has been extensively introduced and cultivated for wood production on the Azores. Description ''Cryptomeria'' is a very large evergreen tree, reaching up to tall and trunk diameter, with red-brown bark which peels in vertical strips. The leaves are arranged spirally, needle-like, long; and the seed cones globular, diameter with about 20–40 scales. It is superficially similar to the related giant sequoia (''Sequoiadendron giganteum''), from which it can be differentiated by the longer leaves (under in the giant sequoia) and smaller cones ( in ...
