Asoka Jayawardena
Major General Deshamanya Asoka Kanthilal Jayawardena, Rana Wickrama Padakkama, RWP, Rana Sura Padakkama, RSP, Vishista Seva Vibhushanaya, VSV, Uttama Seva Padakkama, USP, was Sri Lankan senior army officer and politician. He was the former Provincial Governors of Sri Lanka, Provincial Governor of the Governor of North Eastern Province and Secretary to the Ministry of Defence (Sri Lanka), Minister of Defence. Military career Jayawardena was Overall Operational Commander (OOC) of the Sri Lanka Army. In 1997 he was succeeded by Lt. Gen. Srilal Weerasooriya. Jayawardena also served as Security Forces Commander in Jaffna. Political career Retiring from the Sri Lanka Army in 1998, Jayawardena was appointed as Governor of North Eastern Province. Major General
Major general (abbreviated MG, maj. gen. and similar) is a military rank used in many countries. It is derived from the older rank of sergeant major general. The disappearance of the "sergeant" in the title explains the apparent confusion of a lieutenant general outranking a major general, whereas a major outranks a lieutenant. In the Commonwealth of Nations, Commonwealth and in the United States, when appointed to a field command, a major general is typically in command of a Division (military), division consisting of around 6,000 to 25,000 troops (several regiments or brigades). It is a two-star general, two-star rank that is subordinate to the rank of lieutenant general and senior to the rank of brigadier or brigadier general. The Governor of the North Eastern Province, Sri Lanka ( si, උතුරු සහ නැගෙනහිර පළාත් ආණ්ඩුකාරවරයා ''Uthuru saha Nægenahira palāth āndukāravarayā'') was responsible for the management of the North Eastern Provincial Council, its key functions including exercising powers vested in the Governor by the Provincial Council Act No. 42 of 1987 amended by Act No. 28 of 1990 and the 13th Amendment to the Constitution. The position was abolished in December 2006 with the demerger of the Northern and Eastern Provinces. Lieutenant general (abbreviated as Lt. Gen. and pronounced 'lef-tenant general') ( Sinhala: ලුතිනන් ජෙනරාල් ''Lutinan Jenaral'') is the second-highest rank of the Sri Lanka Army and generally it is the highest active rank as the Sri Lanka army do not have any appointment in the rank of full general but in the case of the appointment of Chief of Defence Staff, the rank of full general is given (if the chief is appointed from the army and not from the navy or the air force). Uttama was a Chola Emperor who ruled from 973 CE to 985 CE in present-day Tamil Nadu, India. According to Tiruvalangadu plates of Rajendra Chola, Madurantaka Uttama Chola's reign is placed after Aditya II. The latter may have been a co-regent of Parantaka II and seems to have died before he could formally ascend the throne. Uttama was the cousin of Parantaka II and was the son of the illustrious Sembiyan Mahadevi and Gandaraditya. North Eastern Provincial Council
The North Eastern Province was one of the provinces of Sri Lanka. The province was created in September 1988 by merging the Northern and Eastern provinces. This merger was declared illegal by the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka in 2006. The province was formally demerged into the Northern and Eastern provinces on 1 January 2007. The capital of the province was Trincomalee. History The Indo-Lanka Accord signed on 29 July 1987 required the Sri Lankan government to devolve powers to the provinces and, in the interim, to merge the Northern and Eastern provinces into one administrative unit. The accord required a referendum to be held by 31 December 1988 in the Eastern Province to decide whether the merger should be permanent.
