Asma Fayoumi
Asma Fayoumi (born 1943, Amman, Jordan) is a Syrian Abstract Expressionist painter. She attended Damascus University in Syria. Her work is in the collection of the Barjeel Art Foundation. In 2011 and 2015 she had a solo shows at the Ayyam Gallery in Beirut. In 2020 through 2022 her work was included in the exhibition ''Taking Shape: Abstraction from the Arab World, 1950s–1980s'' which traveled from the Grey Art Gallery at New York University to the Block Museum of Art at Northwestern University. In 2023 her work was included in the exhibition '' Action, Gesture, Paint: Women Artists and Global Abstraction 1940-1970'' at the Whitechapel Gallery in London. Fayoumi's son is the composer Zaid Jabri Zaid Jabri ( ar, زيد جبري, Zaīd Ǧabrī) is a Syrian-Polish composer, conductor and music educator, who works at the intersection of Western and Middle Eastern musical traditions. Abstract expressionism is a post–World War II art movement in American painting, developed in New York City in the 1940s. It was the first specifically American movement to achieve international influence and put New York at the center of the Western art world, a role formerly filled by Paris. Although the term "abstract expressionism" was first applied to American art in 1946 by the art critic Robert Coates, it had been first used in Germany in 1919 in the magazine ''Der Sturm'', regarding German Expressionism. Barjeel Art Foundation
Barjeel Art Foundation is a non-profit arts organisation based in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. The foundation was established in 2010 by Emirati commentator Sultan Sooud Al Qassemi to manage and exhibit his personal art collection. There are over 1,000 pieces of modern and contemporary art in the foundation's art collection. The organisation primarily focuses on artwork produced by Arab artists worldwide and includes paintings, sculptures and installations. The Block Museum of Art is a free public art museum located on the campus of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. The Block Museum was established in 1980 when Chicago art collectors Mary (daughter of Albert Lasker) and Leigh B. Block (former vice president of Inland Steel Company), donated funds to Northwestern University for the construction of an art exhibition venue. In recognition of their gift, the university named the changing exhibition space the Mary and Leigh Block Gallery.
