Asle Sjåstad
Asle Sjåstad (6 January 1930 – 22 May 2009) was a Norwegian alpine skier. He took eight national championships between 1955 and 1960, representing the club Geilo IL. He finished fifth at the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 1956, and at the 1956 Winter Olympics he acquired a fourteenth place in the downhill event, a 22nd place in the giant slalom event and an eighteenth place in the slalom event. He died in May 2009 in Geilo is a centre in the municipality of Hol in Viken county, Norway. Geilo is primarily a ski resort town, with around 2,500 inhabitants. Geilo Idrettslag is a multi-sports club from Geilo, Norway. Established on 2 December 1917 as ''Gjeilo SK'', it changed its name to ''Gjeilo IL'' on 19 May 1918 and later to ''Geilo IL''. FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 1956
At the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, the six alpine skiing events were held from Friday, 27 January to Friday, 3 February. Toni Sailer of Austria won all three men's events to become the first alpine ski racer to win three gold medals in a single Olympics. The feat has been repeated once, by Jean-Claude Killy in 1968. The races were held at the adjacent Tofana, except for the men's giant slalom, which was held at Monte Faloria. The men's downhill was the final event. The 1956 Winter Olympics, officially known as the VII Olympic Winter Games ( it, VII Giochi Olimpici invernali) and commonly known as Cortina d'Ampezzo 1956 ( lld, Anpezo 1956 or ), was a multi-sport event held in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, from 26 January to 5 February 1956. Cortina, which had originally been awarded the 1944 Winter Olympics, beat out Montreal, Colorado Springs and Lake Placid for the right to host the 1956 Games. The Cortina Games were unique in that many of the venues were within walking distance of each other. The organising committee received financial support from the Italian government for infrastructure improvements, but the rest of the costs for the Games had to be privately financed. Geilo
is a centre in the municipality of Hol in Viken county, Norway. Geilo is primarily a ski resort town, with around 2,500 inhabitants. It is situated in the valley of Hallingdal, 250 km from Oslo and 260 km from Bergen. The Bergen Line facilitated Geilo's development as the first skiing resort in the country, and it is still one of the largest.
