Asian Beach Games
The Asian Beach Games, also known as ABG, is a multi-sport event held every four years among athletes from all over Asia. The Games have been organized by the Olympic Council of Asia. The Games are described as the second or third largest Asian multi-sport event, after the Asian Games. Its popularity is increasing due to the low cost of temporary venues, with beaches and oceans already available, while spectators and tourists are also already available in sand and sea tourist areas. In its history, six countries have hosted the Asian Beach Games. Forty-five nations have participated in the Games. The most recent Games were held in Danang, Vietnam from 24 September to 3 October 2016, while the next edition is scheduled to be held from April 22 to 30, 2026 in Sanya, China. 2008 Asian Beach Games
The 2008 Asian Beach Games or ABG 2008 (, Pesta Olahraga Pantai Asia Dua Ribu Delapan), officially the 1st Asian Beach Games () and commonly as Bali 2008 (, Bali Dua Ribu Delapan), the inaugural Asian Beach Games, was held in Bali, Indonesia, from 18 to 26 October 2008. The opening ceremony was held in the Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park in Nusa Dua. Organisation Bidding process There was no bidding process for Bali to host the games. Although six other countries showed an interest, Bali was chosen by acclamation. It was the second time that Indonesia had hosted an Asia-level multi-sport event, after Jakarta held the 1962 Asian Games. A beach is a landform alongside a body of water which consists of loose particles. The particles composing a beach are typically made from rock, such as sand, gravel, shingle, pebbles, etc., or biological sources, such as mollusc shells or coralline algae. Sediments settle in different densities and structures, depending on the local wave action and weather, creating different textures, colors and gradients or layers of material. Though some beaches form on inland freshwater locations such as lakes and rivers, most beaches are in coastal areas where wave or current action deposits and reworks sediments. Aquathon At The Asian Beach Games
An aquathlon is a multisport race consisting of continuous run and swim elements. Competitors complete a swim immediately followed by a run over various distances. Athletes compete for fastest overall course completion, including the time transitioning between the disciplines. Aquathlon is one of a family of endurance based multisport races, which gained popularity from triathlon and various independent races in the second half of the twentieth century. Modern aquathlon is viewed as a discipline of triathlon as standard races cover the same distances as triathlon but without the cycling leg. As such the sport is governed by International Triathlon Union who organise the world championships each year. 2026 Asian Beach Games
The Sixth Asian Beach Games () is due to be held in Sanya, China. Sanya will be the second Chinese city to host the Asian Beach Games, after Haiyang in 2012. Originally scheduled to be held from 28 November to 6 December 2020, on 10 August 2020, OCA announced that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Games would be postponed to 2-10 April 2021. But on 31 December, OCA announced another postponement, with the new dates of the Games to be announced later "by consultation between the stakeholders". On 18 May 2025, OCA announced that the Sixth Asian Beach Games will now take place from April 22 to 30, 2026. The Fourth Asian Beach Games were held in Phuket Island, Phuket province, Thailand. The games were originally scheduled for Boracay Island, Aklan, Philippines, but was affected by the OCA's hosting changes. The games were held on the same year of the 17th Asian Games. It was the seventh time for Thailand to host an Asia level multi-sports event, after Bangkok held four Asian Games (1966, 1970, 1978 and 1998), one Asian Indoor Games (2005) and one Asian Martial Arts Games (2009).
