Ashworth Act
The Ashworth Act, was an act that was passed by the Texas Senate on December 12, 1840. It made the Ashworth Family as well as all free persons of color and emancipated slaves in the Republic of Texas exempt from a new law stipulating that all Black Texans either leave or risk being enslaved. Background The Ashworths The Ashworths may have been the descendents of Portuguese immigrants of North African genealogy. The Ashworths migrated from South Carolina, then moved through Louisiana, finally ending their journey in the early 1830s in southeast Texas, at the town of Beaumont, when Texas was part of Mexico. Prior to the 1836 ordinance passed by the General Council, the Ashworth family may have been viewed as white, at least socially, by Anglo-American settlers in Texas prior to 1836. Texas Senate
The Texas Senate ( es, Senado de Texas) is the upper house of the Texas State Legislature. There are 31 members of the Senate, representing single-member districts across the U.S. state of Texas, with populations of approximately 806,000 per constituency, based on the 2010 U.S. Census. There are no term limits, and each term is four years long. Elections are held in even-numbered years on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. In elections in years ending in 2, all seats are up for election. Half of the senators will serve a two-year term, based on a drawing; the other half will fill regular four-year terms. In the case of the latter, they or their successors will be up for two-year terms in the next year that ends in 0. As such, in other elections, about half of the Texas Senate is on the ballot. Texas Independence Day is the celebration of the adoption of the Texas Declaration of Independence on March 2, 1836. With this document signed by 59 delegates, settlers in Mexican Texas officially declared independence from Mexico and created the Republic of Texas. It is not, however, an official state holiday whereby offices are closed, but instead a "partial staffing holiday"; state offices are required to be open on that day but with reduced staffing. The Texas Declaration of Independence was the formal declaration of independence of the Republic of Texas from Mexico in the Texas Revolution. It was adopted at the Convention of 1836 at Washington-on-the-Brazos on March 2, 1836, and was formally signed the next day after mistakes were noted in the text. Mexican Texas
Mexican Texas is the historiographical name used to refer to the era of Texan history between 1821 and 1836, when it was part of Mexico. Mexico gained independence in 1821 after winning its war against Spain, which began in 1810. Initially, Mexican Texas operated similarly to Spanish Texas. Ratification of the 1824 Constitution of Mexico created a federal structure, and the province of Tejas was joined with the province of Coahuila to form the state of Coahuila y Tejas.
