Ashton Calvert
Ashton Trevor Calvert, (9 November 1945 – 16 November 2007) was a senior Australian public servant. He was Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade from April 1998 to January 2005. Early life Ashton Calvert was born on 9 November 1945 in Hobart, Tasmania. He was the great-grandchild of William Calvert, a free settler to Tasmania who had arrived on the island in 1832. Calvert attended Hobart High School and then the University of Tasmania. As a Rhodes Scholar, he went on to attend the University of Oxford, attaining a doctorate in mathematics. During his time at Oxford, Calvert was the president-cox of the Oxford rowing team. Career Calvert joined the Australian Public Service in 1970 in the Department of External Affairs (later Department of Foreign Affairs). Companions Of The Order Of Australia
The Order of Australia is the only Australian order of chivalry. It was established on 14 February 1975 by Elizabeth II, Queen of Australia, to recognise Australian citizens and other persons for achievement, meritorious service, or for both. At that time, Companion of the Order of Australia was the highest of three grades of the Order (Companion, Officer, Member). On 24 May 1976, the grade of Knight or Dame of the Order was established, displacing Companion as the highest grade. On 3 June 1986, the Knight/Dame grade was abolished, and Companion was once again the highest grade. On 25 March 2014, the Knight/Dame grade was re-established, Companion once again being relegated to the second highest grade of the Order. Michael L'Estrange
Michael Gerard L'Estrange (born 12 October 1952 in North Sydney, New South Wales) is an Australian academic and former public servant. He is the former Head of the National Security College at the Australian National University, in Canberra. L'Estrange had earlier served a long career in the Australian public service including as a diplomat and as Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Biography L'Estrange attended St Aloysius' College in Sydney and then studied history at the University of Sydney residing at St John's College, and graduated in 1974. Rawdon Dalrymple
Frederick Rawdon Dalrymple (born 6 November 1930) is a former Australian public servant and diplomat. Dalrymple was born in Sydney and educated at Shore School in North Sydney and the University of Sydney. In 1951, he was selected as the New South Wales Rhodes scholar for 1952 and went on to study at Oxford University in the United Kingdom. Dalrymple joined the Department of External Affairs in 1957. He went on to appointments as Ambassador to Israel (1972–1975), Ambassador to Indonesia (1981–1985), Ambassador to the United States (1985–1989) and Ambassador to Japan (1989–1993).
