Ashig Garib (opera)
''Ashig Garib'' ( az, Aşıq Qərib) – is the first opera written by Azerbaijani composer Zulfugar Hajibeyov, in 1916, based on motifs of a dastan of the same name. The opera was staged in Baku, in the theater of Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev, for the first time. Actors and singers such as Huseyngulu Sarabski, Huseynagha Hajibababeyov and others performed main parts of “Ashig Garib” opera. Ashiq Qarib (Huseyin Sarabski)
''Ashiq Qarib'' ( az, Aşıq Qərib, literally "the wandering ashik") is an anonymous romantic dastan, composed not earlier than the 16—17th centuries and popular in Transcaucasia and Central Asia. The verses, which are incorporated into the prose, are ascribed to the eponymous hero, a wandering Ashik who began his journeys with worldly love and attains wisdom by travelling and learning then achieving sainthood. The original Azerbaijani version was first recorded by Mikhail Lermontov in 1837 and was published in 1846. In 1915 Azerbaijani composer Zulfugar Hajibeyov wrote an opera ''Ashiq Qarib''. Zulfugar Hajibeyov
Zulfugar Abdulhuseyn oghlu Hajibeyov ( az, Zülfüqar bəy Əbdülhüseyn bəy oğlu Hacıbəyov, 17 April 1884 – 30 September 1950) was an Azerbaijani composer and a member of a family noted for its musical talents. He was one of the founders of the Azerbaijan Music Comedy Theater. Biography Hajibeyov was born in Shusha on 17 April 1884. Hajibeyov's brother Uzeyir Hajibeyov is considered the "Father of Classical Music" in Azerbaijan. Their brother Jeyhun was a publicist, journalist, and ethnographer, and helped Uzeyir compose the opera ''Layla and Majnun''. His son, Niyazi Hajibeyov, was also a composer, and directed the Azerbaijan State Symphony Orchestra for 40 years. Hajibeyov died on 30 September 1950. He is buried in the Alley of Honor in Baku, Azerbaijan. Hajibeyov's house in Shusha is classified as a historical monument "bearing state importance" by Azerbaijan. Dastan
Dastan ( fa, داستان ''dâstân'', meaning "story" or "tale") is an ornate form of oral history from Central Asia, Iran, Turkey and Azerbaijan. A dastan is generally centered on one individual who protects his tribe or his people from an outside invader or enemy, although only occasionally can this figure be traced back to a historical person. This main character sets an example of how one should act, and the dastan becomes a teaching tool — for example the Sufi master and Turkic poet Ahmed Yesevi said "Let the scholars hear my wisdom, treating my words like a dastan". Alongside the wisdom, each dastan is rich with cultural history of interest to scholars. During the Russian conquest of Central Asia, many new dastans were created to protest the Russian occupation. Huseyngulu Sarabski ( az, Hüseynqulu Sarabski), born Hüseynqulu Malik oğlu Rzayev (20 March 1879 – 16 February 1945), was an Azerbaijani opera singer (tenor), composer, playwright, stage actor, theatre director, and musician (tar). Early life Sarabski was born to poor parents in Baku (then part of the Russian Empire, now capital of Azerbaijan) on Nowruz Eve. At a young age, he was sent to a mullah to study the Koran. Unable to overcome the language barrier and having received severe beatings from the mullah, Huseyngulu managed to convince his parents to let him quit. In 1891, at the age 12, he watched a theatrical performance for the first time. It was staged by amateur actors and called ''Khan Sarabi'' adapted from Mirza Fatali Akhundov's play ''Sarguzasht-i vazir-i Khan-i Lankaran''. Rubaba Khalil qizi Muradova ( az, Rübabə Muradova), born Rubaba Ishragi (21 March 1930 – 28 August 1983), was an Iranian and Azerbaijani opera ( mezzo-soprano) and folk singer. She graduated from the Zeynalli College of Music in Baku and worked at the Azerbaijan State Opera and Ballet Theatre, where she started in 1954. In 1971, Rubaba Muradova became the People's Artist of Azerbaijan. Early life Rubaba Muradova was born to a family of a cleric in the Iranian city of Ardabil. In 1943, she moved to then Soviet Azerbaijan, and settled in the city of Ali Bayramli. Since age 17, she acted in various roles at the local theaters. Opera in Azerbaijan has a history dating back to the 19th century Russian Empire. History 19th and early 20th centuries. Russian Empire The emergence of opera and ballet in Azerbaijan is associated with the Imperial Russian period of Azerbaijani history when Azerbaijanis became exposed to European music traditions first-hand. The very first documented performance of an opera in Baku took place in May 1889 when Alexey Verstovsky's opera ''Askold's grave'' was staged at a circus arena in Baku (on the site of the current Azerbaijan Carpet Museum building), accompanied by the folk choir of Dmitry Agrenev-Slavyanski.
