Asherton Independent School District
Asherton Independent School District was a public school district based in the community of Asherton, Texas (USA). The community was along the Mexico–United States border, and was southwest of San Antonio. The district existed until 1999, when it was ordered consolidated with Carrizo Springs schools by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) to form the Carrizo Springs Consolidated Independent School District. The TEA determined that the Asherton ISD had not followed proper procedure in assessing school property taxes, the basis for its closure. TEA officials stated that "financial instability/insolvency" was the reason behind the district's dissolution. The Carrizo Springs district moved all students in grades 7-12 into its existing junior high and high schools, but left the Asherton school open to serve grades PreK-6. Asherton is a city in Dimmit County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,084 at the 2010 census, down from 1,342 at the 2000 census. The estimated population in 2018 was 1,064. U.S. Highway 83 runs through Asherton. History Rancher Asher Richardson built the town after he purchased a huge tract of land in a special state sale. His Asherton Land and Irrigation Company developed . Richardson subsequently funded the Asherton and Gulf Railway Company. Carrizo Springs, Texas
Carrizo Springs is the largest city in and the county seat of Dimmit County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,368 at the 2010 census. (2018 estimate 5,470). The name of the town is derived from the local springs, which were named by the Spanish for the cane grass that once grew around them. It is the oldest town in Dimmit County. Artesian wells in the area are known for their pure, clean water. This water is often exported from Carrizo Springs for use as holy water. Texas Assessment Of Academic Skills
The TAAS, or Texas Assessment of Academic Skills, was the third standardized test used in Texas between 1991 and 2002, when it was replaced by the TAKS test from 2003 to 2013. It was used from grades 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11. Passing the Grade 11 level was required for graduation, but many opportunities for retesting were available. The implementation of the TAAS was the first time a state-mandated exam was required to be passed for graduation. There were many alternative routes available for students unable to pass the TAAS. The TAAS tested 3 areas of proficiency: reading, writing, and math. The math and reading sections consisted of multiple-choice, while the writing section consisted of a series of prompts for which essays had to be written.
