Bertram Ashburnham, 4th Earl Of Ashburnham
Bertram Ashburnham, 4th Earl of Ashburnham (23 November 1797 – 22 June 1878) was a British peer. He was the fourth son of George Ashburnham, 3rd Earl of Ashburnham. As the eldest son still living when his father died in 1830, he succeeded as Earl of Ashburnham, Viscount St. Asaph and Baron of Ashburnham. He married Katherine Charlotte Baillie in 1840. They had four daughters and seven sons, including Bertram, the 5th Earl of Ashburnham, who succeeded his father in 1878, and Thomas, the 6th Earl, who succeeded his brother in 1913 when the latter died without a son. John Ashburnham, 2nd Earl Of Ashburnham
John Ashburnham, 2nd Earl of Ashburnham, PC (30 October 1724 – 8 April 1812), styled Viscount St Asaph from 1730 to 1737, was a British peer and courtier. Early life Ashburnham was the only son of John Ashburnham, 1st Earl of Ashburnham, by his third wife, Jemima Grey, the daughter of the courtier Duke of Kent. Career In 1737, he inherited his father's titles and became a Lord of the Bedchamber in 1748. From 1753 to 1762, Ashburnham was Keeper of Hyde Park and St. James's Park and Lord Lieutenant of Sussex from 1754 to 1757. In 1765, he was appointed Master of the Great Wardrobe, and Groom of the Stole in 1775. In 1767, he acquired estates in Chelsea from Sir Richard Glyn, and had his residence at Ashburnham House on Lots Lane. He sold the estate to the widowed Lady Mary Coke in 1786. Sir William Ashburnham, 2nd Baronet
Sir William Ashburnham, 2nd Baronet (1 April 1678 – 7 November 1755) was a British politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1710 and 1741. Ashburnham was the eldest surviving son of Sir Denny Ashburnham, 1st Baronet of Broomham and his wife Anne Watkins, daughter of Sir David Watkins. In 1697, he succeeded his father in the baronetcy. He married Margaret Pelham, daughter of Sir Nicholas Pelham on 7 June 1701. Ashburnham was appointed to a sinecure post as Chamberlain of the Exchequer in 1710 and held the post until his death. At the 1710 general election he was returned unopposed as Member of Parliament for Hastings on the family interest but did not stand in 1713. He was returned as MP for Seaford at the 1715 general election but resigned his seat in 1717 when he was granted another sinecure post as Commissioner of the Alienation Office. William Ashburnham, 2nd Baron Ashburnham (21 May 1679 – 16 June 1710) was an English landowner and Tory politician who sat in the English and British House of Commons from 1702 until 1710, when he succeeded to the peerage as Baron Ashburnham and entered the House of Lords. Ashburnham was the eldest son of John Ashburnham, 1st Baron Ashburnham, and his wife Bridget Vaughan, daughter of Walter Vaughan, of Porthammel House, Brecknockshire. Ashburnham was put forward by his father for Hastings at the second general election of 1701, but was defeated. However at the 1702 English general election, he was returned unopposed as Member of Parliament for Hastings. His only known action in Parliament was to act as teller with regard to the occasional conformity bill. Thomas Ashburnham, 6th Earl of Ashburnham (8 April 1855 – 12 May 1924) was a British Army officer and peerage of Great Britain, peer, the last Earl of Ashburnham. Early life Thomas Ashburnham was the fifth of seven sons born to Bertram Ashburnham, 4th Earl of Ashburnham, by his wife, Lady Catherine Charlotte Baillie. His eldest brother, also named Bertram, succeeded to the title as Bertram Ashburnham, 5th Earl of Ashburnham, 5th Earl in 1878. Ashburnham was educated at Adams Grammar School in Newport, Shropshire, before going up to Trinity College, Cambridge. Thomas Ashburnham
General Thomas Ashburnham CB (1808 – 2 March 1872) was Commander of British Troops in China and Hong Kong. Military career Born the son of the 3rd Earl of Ashburnham, Thomas Ashburnham became a Coldstream Guards officer. He went on to serve in India during the First Anglo-Sikh War between 1845 and 1846. He was appointed Commander of British Troops in China and Hong Kong in 1857. He was also Colonel of the 82nd Regiment of Foot from 1859 until his death. In retirement he lived in Park Street in London and died in 1872. John Ashburnham, 1st Baron Ashburnham (15 January 1656 – 21 January 1710) was an English landowner and politician. Ashburnham was the son of William Ashburnham and the grandson of John Ashburnham. His mother was the Honourable Elizabeth, daughter of John Poulett, 1st Baron Poulett. He sat as Member of Parliament for Hastings from 1679 to 1681 and again from 1685 to 1689. As a baron of the Cinque Ports he was one of the holders of the canopy at the coronation of James II in 1685 and coronation of William and Mary in 1688. He is thought to have become disillusioned with James and to have welcomed the accession of William and Mary. In 1689 he was raised to the peerage as Baron Ashburnham, of Ashburnham in the County of Sussex. He later served as Custos Rotulorum of Breconshire from 1702 to 1710. Bertram Ashburnham, 5th Earl of Ashburnham (28 October 1840 – 15 January 1913) was a British peer. He was the English agent for the Spanish Carlist cause, and a supporter of Irish Home Rule. He sold off the Ashburnham collection of manuscripts which the 4th Earl had collected. Early life and family Bertram Ashburnham was born on 26 October 1840, the eldest son of Bertram Ashburnham, 4th Earl of Ashburnham. He was educated at Westminster School and in France. He was a convert to Roman Catholicism, and was formally received into the Church in 1872. John Ashburnham (1603 – 15 June 1671) was an English courtier, diplomat and politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1640 and 1667. He supported the Royalist cause in the English Civil War and was an attendant on the King. Background Ashburnham was the eldest son of Sir John Ashburnham by Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Thomas Beaumont. His father was a wastrel and died in 1620, but his mother was related to Lady Villiers, mother of George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham.
