Ashbridge's Bay Yacht Club
Ashbridge's Bay Yacht Club (ABYC) is a yacht club in Ashbridge's Bay, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The club offers a junior and adult sailing school, dinghy and keelboat racing programs, a cooperative sailing program, cruising and social events. In 2022, there are 702 members and docks for up to 292 keelboats. Club facilities include a restaurant, marine railway, and a public fuel dock with pumpout, diesel and gasoline. History The club was founded in 1932 and was initially located at Knox and Eastern Avenues. Archie Walker was the club's first commodore. The original clubhouse was built in 1936 by its members. ABYC was chartered as a not-for-profit in 1946 as an organization "to advance the sport of yachting in all its branches". The club began to move locations in 1971 to new land accessible by Lakeshore Avenue. From 1975-1977, the current clubhouse was built, which includes a bar and restaurant. The Laser Radial or ILCA 6 is a popular one-design class of small sailing dinghy, originally built by Laser Performance. It is a singlehanded boat, meaning that it is sailed by one person. The Laser Radial is a variant of the Laser standard, with shorter mast and reduced sail area, allowing light sailors to sail in heavy winds. The International Class is recognised by World Sailing. Mini Transat is a solo transatlantic yacht race which typically starts in France and ends in the Caribbean. The race uses small long yachts conforming to the Mini Transat 6.50 class rules which gives considering scope for development More recently this has led to the formation of two divisions within the class: the production class that limits development and costs, and the prototype class which allows for more flexibility in dimensions and technology. Background History Bob Salmon developed the idea of a mini-transatlantic race in the late 1970s in England with the intent of promoting affordable offshore solo racing. Sarah Douglas (born 21 January 1994 in Burlington) is a Canadian competitive sailor. She won gold in the Laser Radial at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, and took silver in the 2023 competition in Santiago, Chile. She finished 6th at the 2018 Sailing World Championships. She competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Japan, finishing 6th in the Laser Radial class. Life She was born in Burlington, Ontario.
