Ashbel Green
Ashbel Green (July 6, 1762 – May 19, 1848) was an American Presbyterian minister and academic. Biography Born in Hanover Township, New Jersey, Green served as a sergeant of the New Jersey militia during the American Revolutionary War, and went on to study with Dr. John Witherspoon and graduate as valedictorian from the College of New Jersey, known since 1896 as Princeton University, in 1783. Green later became the third Chaplain of the United States House of Representatives from 1792 to 1800, the eighth President of Princeton University, from 1812 to 1822 (and highly unpopular, due to what many students saw as his heavy-handed leadership style), and the second President of the Bible Society at Philadelphia (now known as the Pennsylvania Bible Society) after having been one of its founding members in 1808. Princeton University, founded in 1746 as the College of New Jersey, is a private Ivy League research university located in Princeton, New Jersey. James Carnahan
James Carnahan (November 15, 1775 – March 2, 1859) was an American clergyman and educator who served as the ninth President of Princeton University. Born in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, Carnahan was an 1800 graduate of the school when it was called College of New Jersey. He held positions at churches in New Jersey and New York until moving to Georgetown, District of Columbia in 1814 to teach school for nine years. Alongside John McMillan, Samuel Miller, James Mountain, John Watson, he was one of the earliest instructors and leaders of Canonsburg Academy (later Jefferson College and now Washington & Jefferson College). He was one of the founders of the Franklin Literary Society at Jefferson College. He took the President of Princeton University position in 1823. Robert Stockton Green (March 25, 1831 – May 7, 1895) was an American Democratic Party politician, who was the 27th governor of New Jersey from 1887 to 1890. He also sat for one term in the United States House of Representatives from 1885 to 1887. Early life and education Green was born in Princeton, New Jersey, the son of James S. Green and the former Isabella Williamson McCulloh. His father was U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey from 1835 to 1850. The American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) was among the first American Christian missionary organizations. It was created in 1810 by recent graduates of Williams College. In the 19th century it was the largest and most important of American missionary organizations and consisted of participants from Protestant Reformed traditions such as Presbyterians, Congregationalists, and German Reformed churches.
