Asaro (food)
Asaro, also known as yam porridge or yam pottage, is a traditional dish originating from the Yoruba people, Yoruba of Nigeria, Benin Republic and Togo. It is a one-pot meal made from Yam (vegetable), yam, a starchy tuber, and a variety of other ingredients. It can be enjoyed as a main course or a side dish. Ingredients and preparation The primary ingredient in Asaro is yam, which is peeled, cut into chunks, and boiled until it becomes soft. Other essential ingredients include Palm oil, red palm oil, onions, peppers, salt and a mixture of spices, which are combined in a pot. The dish is often prepared with a generous amount of palm oil to give it its characteristic reddish-orange color and its smoky and nutty flavour. Asaro Mudmen
The "Mudmen" of Papua New Guinea's Asaro tribe, also known as the ''Holosa'', are those who wear a traditional costume centered around masks made of mud. They live nearby the village of Goroka in the Eastern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea. Creation legend There are several oral history versions regarding the creation of the Asaro Mudmen, with anthropologist Todd Otto noting, "there are as many versions of he creation legendas there are sources." In one recitation, they were defeated by an enemy tribe and forced to flee into the Asaro River where they met a man who gave them eyes to kill. They waited until dusk before attempting to escape the one whom was given the eyes was captured. The enemy saw him rise from the muddy banks covered in mud and thought he was spirit. Catherine Asaro
Catherine Ann Asaro (born November 6, 1955) is an American science fiction and fantasy author, singer and teacher. She is best known for her books about the Ruby Dynasty, called the Saga of the Skolian Empire. Biography Catherine Asaro was born on November 6, 1955, in Oakland, California, and grew up in El Cerrito, California. She attended Kennedy High School in Richmond, California as part of the Richmond Voluntary Integration Plan. She has a B.S. with highest honors in chemistry from UCLA, and both a master's in physics and a PhD in chemical physics from Harvard University. When not writing and making appearances at conventions and signings, Asaro teaches math, physics, and chemistry. Frank Asaro (born Francesco Asaro, July 31, 1927 – June 10, 2014) was an Emeritus Senior Scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory associated with the University of California at Berkeley. He is best known as the chemist who discovered the iridium anomaly in the Cretaceous–Paleogene boundary layer that led the team of Luis Alvarez, Walter Alvarez, Frank Asaro, and Helen Michel to propose the Asteroid-Impact Theory, which postulates that an asteroid hit the Earth sixty-five million years ago and caused mass extinction during the age of the dinosaurs. Biography Asaro grew up in Escondido, California, the son of avocado farmer and barber Nicolo Asaro and Antonina (Annie) Asaro. He married Lucille Marie Lavezo and settled in the California Bay Area.
