''As You Like It'' is a 1912 American silent film based on the play of the same name by William Shakespeare. It was directed by J. Stuart Blackton, Charles Kent, and James Young, and was produced by the Vitagraph Company. The film brings stage star Rose Coghlan to the screen to costar alongside Maurice Costello Maurice George Costello (February 22, 1877 – October 29, 1950) was a prominent American vaudeville actor of the late 1890s and early 1900s who later played a principal role in early American films as leading man, supporting player, and director .... Charles Kent (actor)
Charles Kent (18 June 1853 – 21 May 1923) was a British-American stage actor and silent film actor and director. He appeared in more than 140 films between 1908 and 1923. He also directed 36 films between 1908 and 1913. Personal life Kent was born on 18 June 1953 in London to Frederick Kent, an Englishman, and Martha Kent, a French woman, in 1853. William Tefft Johnson, Jr. (September 23, 1883 – October 15, 1956), better known as Tefft Johnson, was an American stage and film actor, and film director and screenwriter. He appeared in 131 films between 1909 and 1926. Biography Johnson was born in Washington, D.C., on September 23, 1883, to William Tefft Johnson and his wife, Anne Wheeler Johnson. He had two sisters and a brother. His father was a soldier and chaplain who was born in Cooperstown, New York in 1834. His father served in the Union Army during the American Civil War, and was wounded at the Battle of Chancellorsville. Discharged because of his wounds, his father sought and won recommission in the army. After the war, his father studied law and was admitted to practice before the D.C. and federal bar. Johnson was already an actor, traveling across the United States, at the age of 15. His father died in 1898, and his mother in 1926. Vitagraph Studios Films
Vitagraph Studios, also known as the Vitagraph Company of America, was a United States motion picture studio. It was founded by J. Stuart Blackton and Albert E. Smith in 1897 in Brooklyn, New York, as the American Vitagraph Company. By 1907, it was the most prolific American film production company, producing many famous silent films. It was bought by Warner Bros. in 1925. History In 1896, English émigré Blackton was moonlighting as a reporter/artist for the New York ''Evening World'' when he was sent to interview Thomas Edison about his new film projector. The inventor talked the entrepreneurial reporter into buying a set of films and a projector. A year later, Blackton and business partner Smith founded the American Vitagraph Company in direct competition with Edison. A third partner, distributor William "Pop" Rock, joined in 1899. Charles Eldridge
Charles Eldridge (September 25, 1854 – October 29, 1922) was an American stage and screen actor of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He appeared in over 100 films, although the majority of those were film shorts. He began on the stage during the 1870s, and appeared in at least one Broadway play, Charles Frohman's 1899 production of ''Because She Loved Him So''. His first appearance in film was in a 1910 short, ''The Legacy'', in which he starred. His first appearance in a feature film was in ''The Strange Story of Sylvia Gray''. In addition to the over 100 shorts he was in, Eldridge appeared in 27 feature films between 1914 and 1922. In his roles in full-length films, he would usually appear in a supporting role, although occasionally be given a lead, as in 1917's '' Polly of the Circus'', 1920's ''Broken Hearts'', and 1922's ''Ashamed of Parents''. Robert McWade
Robert McWade (January 25, 1872 – January 19, 1938), was an American stage and film actor. McWade was born in Buffalo, New York. He was the third actor named Robert McWade, after his father and grandfather. In 1902, McWade debuted on stage with the Murray Hill Stock Company. From 1903 to 1927, he appeared in at least 38 Broadway productions, his last being ''Devil In The Cheese'' (1926), with Bela Lugosi and Fredric March. McWade also appeared in 83 films between 1924 and 1938, for example ''42nd Street'' with Dick Powell and Ruby Keeler (1933). His older brother was character actor Edward McWade. McWade was married to Minne Lee, and they had two sons. On January 19, 1938, McWade died of heart disease in Culver City, California, at age 65. Hughie Mack
Hughie Mack (November 26, 1884 – October 13, 1927) was an American actor of the silent era. He appeared in more than 190 films between 1910 and 1928. He was born in Brooklyn, New York. He was working as a mortician when he paid a casual visit to the Vitagraph studio in Brooklyn. His large frame and comical facial expression made Vitagraph's star comedian John Bunny laugh. As ''Picture Play'' Magazine reported, "The Vitagraph people decided that, if he was funny enough to amuse their star, he could also entertain the public. So he was hired."''Picture Play'', Jan. 1928, p. 26. He later became a prolific character comedian in feature films.
