Arístides Bastidas
Arístides Bastidas (12 March 1924 – 23 September 1992) was a Venezuelan journalist, educator and scientist. He was one of the pioneers of what is termed "science journalism" in Venezuela. Biography Bastidas was born in San Pablo in Yaracuy state, son of Nemesio Bastidas and Castorila Gámez. He moved to Caracas with his family in 1936, settling in a modest neighborhood in the south of the capital. He studied there but did not complete studies because the family economic pressure forced him to perform various jobs until 1945, when started in print journalism. He sympathised with the resistance against the regime of Marcos Pérez Jiménez (1948–1958). A self-taught scientist, from 1968 to 1981 he directed the science page of the Sunday newspaper " El Nacional" where from 1971 until his death he wrote the daily column ''La Ciencia Amena''. Yaracuy
Yaracuy State ( es, link=no, Estado Yaracuy, ;) is one of the 23 states of Venezuela. It is bordered by Falcón in the north, in the west by Lara, in the south by Portuguesa and Cojedes and in the east by Cojedes and Carabobo. Its geography is mountainous: the Andes range ends there, and the Coastal Range begins. It is split by two mountainous systems, the Sierra de Aroa on the North and the Sierra de Nirgua. In between lies the agricultural land drained by the Yaracuy River. Most cities and towns are in this valley, including its capital San Felipe. The economy of Yaracuy is mostly agricultural (sugar cane, corn, cattle raising). Some manufacturing can be found in Yaritagua area and Chivacoa, usually in agribusiness. Consuelo Hernández (born 1952) is a Colombian American poet, scholar, literary critic and associate professor of Latin American studies at American University since 1995. She has received an "Antonio Machado" Award for the poem "Polifonía sobre rieles" among participants from 29 countries in Madrid, Spain, on October 17, 2011. She is a finalist at the international poetry contest of "Ciudad Melilla" in Spain and at the concurso "Letras de Oro" at the University of Miami.
