Arth
Arth is a village, a List of towns in Switzerland, town, and a municipalities of Switzerland, municipality in Schwyz District in the canton of Schwyz in Switzerland. The municipality consists of the villages Arth, Oberarth, and Goldau. The four settlements Rigi Kulm, Rigi Kaltbad, Rigi First, Rigi Klösterli, and Rigi Staffel on the mountain Rigi to the west of Arth are also part of the municipality. History Arth is first mentioned in 1036 as ''Arta''. In 1353 it was mentioned as ''ze Arth''. Geography Arth has an area, , of . Of this area, 40.8% is used for agricultural purposes, while 46.3% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 8.5% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (4.3%) is non-productive (rivers, glaciers or mountains). The municipality is situated on the southern shore of Lake Zug, and along the Gotthard railway line, Gotthard route between Rigi and Rossberg. Amédée Artus
Amedée Urbain Louis Henry Joseph Artus (28 October 1815 – 26 March 1892) was a 19th-century French conductor and composer, author of more than eight hundred incidental music pieces. Born in Perpignan, Amédée Arthur was the son of Joseph Pierre Artus (1791–1864) and Marie Angélique Salvo (1793–1864), both also from Perpignan. His father played the viola, and he was the older brother of Alexandre Artus, also a conductor and composer. Alexandre Artus
Alexandre Artus (27 November 1821 – 19 August 1911) was a 19th-century French conductor and composer. Biography Alexandre Artus was born in Perpignan, the son of Joseph Pierre Artus (1791–1864) and Marie Angélique Salvo (1793–1864), both also from Perpignan. His father played the viola, and he was the younger brother of Amédée Artus, also a composer and conductor. Incidental music and operettas coçmposer, he was the deputy chief and the conductor of the Théâtre de l'Ambigu, which he left in 1863 by disagreements with the director and then became director of the Théâtre du Châtelet from 1885 to his death. He is known to have composed the music for the play by Jules Verne, ''Michel Strogoff'' (1881), adapted from the novel. Artus De Cossé-Brissac
Artus de Cossé-Brissac (1512–1582), lord of Gonnor and Comte de Secondigny, was a Marshal of France, an office he was elevated to in 1567. He served to administer the armies finances during the first of the French Wars of Religion and would lead the royal army in its pursuit of the Prince of Condé during the second civil war. His failure to catch the army led to his dismissal from overall royal command. During the third civil war he would again lead troops, beating a small Protestant force, before being defeated in the final days of the war at Arney-le-Duc. His long history of Politique leanings would push him into the orbit of the Malcontents for which he would be arrested in 1574. Nicolas Maurice Arthus
Nicolas Maurice Arthus (, 9 January 1862 – 24 February 1945) was a French immunologist and physiologist. The Arthus reaction, a localized inflammation, inflammatory response, is named after him. Arthus was born on 9 January 1862 in Angers, France. He studied medicine in Paris and received his doctorate in 1886. In 1896 he became Professor of Physiology at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland. He returned to France to work at the Pasteur Institute in 1900, and later taught at the ''Ecole de Médecine de Marseilles'' (currently integrated in the University of the Mediterranean). In 1907, he was appointed to the Chair of Physiology at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland, where he remained for twenty-five years. He died in Fribourg on 24 February 1945. Apart from the reaction named after him, Arthus is best known for his work on anaphylaxis. He also studied snake venom and the role of calcium in the coagulation of blood. Yann Arthus-Bertrand
Yann Arthus-Bertrand (born 13 March 1946) is a French environmentalist, activist, journalist and photographer. He has also directed films about the impact of humans on the planet. He is especially well known for his book ''Earth from Above'' (1999) and his films ''Home'' (2009) and ''Human'' (2015). It is because of this commitment that Yann Arthus-Bertrand was designated Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Environment Programme on Earth Day (22 April 2009). Early life Yann Arthus-Bertrand was born in Paris on 13 March 1946 in a renowned jewellers' family founded in 1803 by Claude Arthus-Bertrand and Michel-Ange Marion. His sister Catherine is one of his closest collaborators. He has been interested in nature and wildlife from an early age.
