Arthur Wright (writer)
Arthur Wright (1870 – 19 December 1932) was an Australian writer best known for his novels set against a background of the sporting world, particularly horseracing, which meant he was often compared during his lifetime to Nat Gould. In his lifetime he was called "Australia's most prolific novelist". Biography Wright was born in the small town of Green Swamp near Bathurst. His family lived in Bathurst, then Cow Flat before moving to Sydney. Wright was educated at Paddington Public School, worked for a sewing machine firm, then went bush for a few years, doing various odd jobs in places like the mines, shearing sheds and railways. He returned to Sydney and worked for the Water and Sewerage Board for eight years. While at the Water Board, Wright began to write in his spare time, and his short stories started appearing in magazines such as ''The Bulletin''. His first novel, ''Keane of Kalgoorlie'' was a big success, launching his career as a novelist. He wrote mainly for the B ...

Nat Gould
Nathaniel Gould (21 December 1857 – 25 July 1919), commonly known as Nat Gould, was a British novelist. History Gould was born at Manchester, Lancashire, the only surviving child of Nathaniel Gould, a tea merchant, and his wife Mary, ''née'' Wright. Both parents came from Derbyshire yeomen families. The boy was indulgently brought up and well educated. His father died just before he was to have left school, and Gould tried first his father's tea trade and then farming at Bradbourne with his uncles. Gould became a good horseman but a poor farmer. In 1877, in reply to an advertisement, he was given a position on the ''Newark Advertiser'' gaining a good all-round knowledge of press work. After a few years he became restless, and in 1884 sailed for Australia, where he became a reporter on the ''Brisbane Telegraph'' in its shipping, commercial and racing departments. In 1887 after disagreements with the ''Telegraph'' management, Gould went to Sydney and worked on the ''Referee'' a ...

Fettered By Fate
''Fettered by Fate'' is a mystery novel by Australian sporting novelist Arthur Wright, a murder story with a horse-racing backdrop, published in 1921. Reception According to ''The Queenslander'' "it is one of the best of Arthur Wright's books, and though Mr. Wright runs dangerously close to an anachronism in associating a survivor of a bushranging gang with modern motor cars that will not concern the reader who is looking for excitement." Another reviewer said "in its 22 chapters there is not a dull moment for the story moves rapidly and each page is crowned with incident." A Game Of Chance
''A Game of Chance'' is a 1920 sporting novel by Arthur Wright, about sensational events in the world of Australian horse racing. Reception According to the reviewer in the ''Western Mail'': Hero and heroine and villain of the piece are well enough drawn; and there is incident enough in the book to satisfy the veriest glutton for sensation; while towards the close of an exciting story the murder trial... finishes in a most unexpected manner. Mr. Arthur Wright has been compared with the late Nat Gould; and as a rule, his books contain even greater dramatic, or melodramatic, possibilities, or impossibilities, than the numerous works of that most prolific writer. Over The Odds (novel)
''Over the Odds'' is a 1918 novel by Arthur Wright. Plot Ossy Odson is left a fortune provided he gets married by a certain date. Reception The ''Sunday Times'' said that: Here is a remarkable thing. In other parts of the world writers of no special merit are making large incomes by turning out conventional sporting novels. In Australia Mr. Arthur Wright, the best sporting novelist of them all, is apparently content with a purely local reputation. His latest book is well up to his standard. The people are credible, the emotions are convincing and not strained, and the sporting color is (as far as a non-sporting reviewer can judge) all that it should be. Also, the little story is a wholesome little story in its form, and it is one of those readable little stories with which one can pleasantly pass a lazy afternoon. The ''Sydney Morning Herald'' stated that: Arthur Wright has reduced the construction of sporting tales to an exact science. "Over the Odds" has all the qualities which h ...

Under A Cloud (novel)
''Under a Cloud'' is a 1916 book by Arthur Wright. Plot A jockey deliberately rides his horse to defeat in order to secure the hand of the girl he loves. He is disqualified from riding and the girl marries his rival. Ten years later he returns looking for revenge. Reception The ''West Australian'' called it "a story remarkable for its sensationalism if for nothing else." A book critic from the ''Australian Worker'' said that: At times Wright moves his characters so quickly that he seems to lose tab of their doings. For instance, in his latest book, 'Under a Cloud'... he makes his hero put 5s. on a horse at 20 to 1 and collect ten sovereigns when the mare wins! Either Wright is a bad arithmetician or that bookmaker was altogether too generous to shout the odds in the ear of a wicked world. Still, the average sensation-seeker doesn't mind a mere errors in arithmetic when exciting deeds are oozing out of every page. And, unfortunately for the reputation of Australia's literary taste, ...
