Arthur Wilson (administrator)
Arthur J. Wilson was an Australian administrator and historian who was the chairman of the Fitzroy–Brisbane Lions Historical Society. He had been involved with Fitzroy and its successor, the Brisbane Lions, for more than 40 years. Fitzroy involvement Wilson was a mascot in the 1944 Grand Final, in which Fitzroy won its last VFL premiership. He unofficially joined the club in 1965, and officially joined the Fitzroy General Committee in 1968. He remained on the Committee until 1978, and was the Recruiting manager in 1979. His recruiting has been described as "important" to the club's success in the 1980s. From 1980 to 1985 he was the club's secretary, and he had his last official stint at the club from 1986 to 1990, as the Football Manager. Fitzroy Football Club
The Fitzroy Football Club is an Australian rules football club currently competing in the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA). Formed in 1883 to represent the inner-Melbourne municipality of Fitzroy, the club was a member of the Victorian Football Association (VFA), before becoming a foundation member of the breakaway Victorian Football League (VFL/AFL) in 1897. Fitzroy won a total of eight VFL premierships, of which seven (1898, 1899, 1904, 1905, 1913, 1916 and 1922) were won whilst they were nicknamed the Maroons and one (1944) as the Gorillas. The decision of the club to change its nickname to the Lions in 1957 coincided with what history now records as the beginning of decades of poor on-field performance and financial losses that eventually resulted in the club being placed into administration, ultimately leaving the AFL at the end of the 1996 season. Brisbane Lions
The Brisbane Lions is a professional Australian rules football club based in Brisbane, Queensland, that plays in the Australian Football League (AFL). The club was formed in late 1996 via a merger of the Melbourne-based 1883 foundation VFL club the Fitzroy Lions, and the 1987 Queensland based expansion club the Brisbane Bears, with the colours of maroon, blue, and gold being drawn from both parent clubs. The Lions are one of the most successful AFL club of the 2000s, appearing in four consecutive Grand Finals from 2001 to 2004 and winning three premierships ( 2001, 2002, 2003). 1944 VFL Grand Final
The 1944 VFL Grand Final was an Australian rules football game contested between the Fitzroy Football Club and Richmond Football Club, held at the Junction Oval in Melbourne on 30 September 1944. It was the 46th annual grand final of the Victorian Football League, staged to determine the premiers for the 1944 VFL season. The match was won by Fitzroy by a margin of 15 points, marking that club's first premiership since 1922, and its eighth (and final) premiership and final grand final appearance. The match attracted 41,000 spectators, down on expectations owing in part to a one-day tram strike. This was the last grand final to have two captain-coaches playing against each other.. Brisbane Bears
The Brisbane Football Club, nicknamed the Bears, was a professional Australian rules football club based in Queensland on the Gold Coast (relocated to Brisbane in 1993). The club participated in the Victorian/Australian Football League (VFL/AFL) between 1987 and 1996, and entered the league as the first of two non-Victorian expansion teams. It was the first privately owned club in the league's history. George Coates (footballer)
George Albert Phillip Coates (3 July 1923 – 16 February 2014) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Fitzroy in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Coates had a delayed start to league football due to the war. He served as a Leading Aircraftman with the No. 67 Squadron of the Royal Australian Air Force. A rover, he made his debut in 1947 and proved to be a consistent goal-kicker for Fitzroy, kicking at least 20 goals in three of his first four seasons. Coates played finals football in 1947 and 1952, ending up on a losing preliminary final team on each occasion. He represented Victoria in 1949. Once he left Fitzroy, Coates spent some time as coach of State Savings Bank in the Victorian Amateur Football Association. Coates was later a Fitzroy administrator for over 20 years.
