Captain Arthur Ryan Smith Jr. OC AOE DFC (May 16, 1919 – June 30, 2008) was a Canadian oilfield worker, fighter pilot, executive business man, philanthropist, magazine editor, advertising executive and politician on the municipal, provincial and federal levels of government. Early life Arthur Ryan Smith was born in Calgary, Alberta, on May 16, 1919, to Arthur LeRoy Smith, Member of Parliament for Calgary West from 1945 to 1951, and Sara Isobel Ryan. He grew up in Calgary and in British Columbia. He got his first job as an oil field worker at the age of 16 in Turner Valley, Alberta, and spent four years working in the oil patch. At the outbreak of World War II Smith enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and became a pilot. He flew 34 combat missions on Lancaster bombers and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Arthur Smith (footballer, Born 1915)
Arthur Hoyle Smith (8 May 1915 – 21 August 2021) was an English professional footballer. At age 106 he was, at the time of his death, the oldest living former professional Football League player. Career Smith's career started with Bury, where he signed as an amateur in November 1934. The following month, he made his debut for the club against Notts County, and turned out for the club three more times over the course of the 1934–35 season. In September 1935, Smith signed for Bury as a professional, but found himself playing regularly for the reserve side. As a result, he did not feature for the first team again, and in 1938, he joined Leicester City on a free transfer. Smith's time at Leicester was brief, owing to the outbreak of the Second World War. In his first season with Leicester, he made eight appearances, and in his second, he made two more, with a brace against Manchester City. 'Mad' Arthur Smith ( – 17 December 1946) was an English rugby union and professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1900s and 1910s. He played club level rugby union (RU) for Yorkley RFC and Cinderford R.F.C., and representative level rugby league (RL) for Great Britain and England, and at club level for Oldham and Halifax, as a forward. He served in the First World War and was wounded by a German bullet. Arthur Smith (17 March 1872 – 3 October 1952) was an English cricketer. Smith was a right-handed batsman who bowled right-arm fast. He was born at Barlestone, Leicestershire. Smith made his first-class debut for Leicestershire against Yorkshire at Headingley in the 1897 County Championship. He made two further first-class appearances in that season against Lancashire and the Marylebone Cricket Club, while his fourth and final first-class appearance came in the 1901 County Championship against Derbyshire. Smith's main role was as a bowler, in his four first-class matches he took 5 wickets at an expensive average of 27.00, with best figures of 3/40. With the bat, he scored 16 runs at a batting average of 2.66, with a high score of 9. He died at Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, on 3 October 1952. Arthur Smith (28 May 1851 – 8 March 1923) was an English cricketer. Smith was a right-handed batsman who bowled left-arm roundarm slow-medium. He was born at Hurstpierpoint, Sussex. Smith made his first-class debut for Sussex against Yorkshire in 1874 at the County Ground, Hove. He made eighteen further first-class appearances for Sussex, the last of which came against Surrey in 1880. Smith's role in a team was a bowler, in his nineteen first-class matches for Sussex he took 61 wickets at an average of 17.80, with best figures of 7/47. These figures were one of three five wicket hauls he took and came against Surrey in 1876, a match in which he also took figures of 5/77 to claim his only haul of ten wickets in a match. With the bat, he scored 94 runs at an average of 4.27, with a high score of 13. He died at Amberley, Sussex, on 8 March 1923. National Hunt Chase Challenge Cup
The National Hunt Challenge Cup is a Grade 2 National Hunt steeplechase in Great Britain for amateur riders which is open to horses aged five years or older. It is run on the Old Course at Cheltenham over a distance of about 3 miles 6 furlongs (3 miles 5 furlongs and 201 yards, or 6,018 metres), and during its running there are twenty-three fences to be jumped. The race is for novice chasers, and it is scheduled to take place each year during the Cheltenham Festival in March. History Now in its year, the National Hunt Chase has been run more times than any other event at the Cheltenham Festival.
