Arthur S. Flemming Award
The Arthur S. Flemming Award is an award given annually to employees of the United States federal government. More than 500 individuals have received the award since it was created in 1948. The Trachtenberg School of Public Policy & Public Administration of The George Washington University administers the award. A nomination requires the person to be a federal employee for at least three years and for less than fifteen years. Every year twelve awards are given in five different categories: Leadership and/or Management, Legal Achievement, Social Science, Clinical Trials and Translational Research, Applied Science and Engineering, and Basic Science. Federal Agencies are encouraged to nominate outstanding public servants who meet the nomination requirements. Samuel Broder
Samuel Broder spent his childhood in Poland, in a group of Jewish guerrillas threatened by the Nazis. He emigrated to the United States with a group of Polish survivors and settled with his parents in an industrial neighborhood in Detroit, where they ran a snack bar that was razed to the ground during the riots in 1968 for the assassination of Martin Luther King. Broder didn’t like to work there, he had different goals. He thought that in science he could succeed without belonging to a high socioeconomic class, so he began to get good grades in science subjects and got a scholarship to Michigan State University. He was a co-developer of some of the first effective drugs for the treatment of AIDS and was Director of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) from 1989 to 1995. George Khoury (molecular Biologist)
George Khoury (1943 – April 25, 1987) was an American scientist who was chief of the molecular virology laboratory at the National Cancer Institute from 1980 to his death. He conducted early research with enhancers and was elected to membership in the National Academy of Sciences shortly before his death from lymphoma. Biography Born in Pittsburgh to George and Dorothy Khoury, he attended William Allen High School. Khoury graduated from Princeton University and Harvard Medical School. At Harvard, he received early research training from John Franklin Enders, and he began to study SV40 with Jan van der Noorda. After a year as a medical intern at Massachusetts General Hospital, Khoury joined NIH as a research associate. He conducted early investigations into transcription patterns in the SV40 genome. Ivy Hooks
Ivy Fay Hooks (born November 17, 1941) is an American mathematician and engineer who worked for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). She joined NASA after graduating from the University of Houston with a master's degree in mathematics and physics in 1965. Her first assignment was with the Apollo program, where she worked on the modeling of lighting on the Moon and the dynamics of the launch escape system, among other projects. She then went on to play an important role in the design and development of the Space Shuttle, being one of only two women engineers assigned to the original design team for the orbiter. Stanley Bruce Herschensohn (September 10, 1932 – November 30, 2020) was an American conservative political commentator, author, and senior fellow at the Pepperdine University School of Public Policy in Malibu, California. Herschensohn quickly rose to prominence in the Republican Party, becoming a consultant to the Republican National Convention in 1972 and joined the Nixon administration on September 11, 1972. He served primarily as a speech writer. He left following Nixon's resignation, but served on the Ronald Reagan Presidential Transition Team and as an official in the Reagan administration. Jun Ye (; born 1967) is a Chinese-American physicist at JILA, National Institute of Standards and Technology, and the University of Colorado Boulder, working primarily in the field of atomic, molecular and optical physics.
