Arthur Pole Penton
Major-General Arthur Pole Penton (6 October 185428 August 1920) was a British officer in the Royal Artillery, and Commandant of the New Zealand Defence Forces from 1897 to 1901. Military career Penton was commissioned a Lieutenant (British Army and Royal Marines), lieutenant in the Royal Artillery on 9 January 1873.Hart′s Army list, 1903 He served in the Second Anglo-Afghan War in 1878 and was mentioned in dispatches. Promotion to Captain (BARM), captain came on 7 July 1882, and to Major (British Army and Royal Marines), major on 1 October 1889. He was Commandant of the New Zealand Defence Forces between 1896 and 1901, during which he received the substantive promotion to Lieutenant colonel (British Army and Royal Marines), lieutenant-colonel on 15 December 1898. Colonel (British Army)
Colonel (Col) is a rank of the British Army and Royal Marines, ranking below brigadier, and above lieutenant colonel. British colonels are not usually field commanders; typically they serve as staff officers between field commands at battalion and brigade level. The insignia is two diamond-shaped pips (properly called "Bath Stars") below a crown. The crown has varied in the past with different monarchs; Elizabeth II's reign used St Edward's Crown. The Most Honourable Order of the Bath is a British order of chivalry founded by George I on 18 May 1725. The name derives from the elaborate medieval ceremony for appointing a knight, which involved bathing (as a symbol of purification) as one of its elements. The knights so created were known as "Knights of the Bath". George I "erected the Knights of the Bath into a regular Military Order". He did not (as is commonly believed) revive the Order of the Bath, since it had never previously existed as an Order, in the sense of a body of knights who were governed by a set of statutes and whose numbers were replenished when vacancies occurred. Sir Robert Lock
Major General Sir Robert Ferguson Lock KBE CB (13 December 1879 – 25 July 1957) was a British Army officer in the Royal Artillery who served during the First World War. Career Lock was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Royal Garrison Artillery on 23 June 1898, and promoted to lieutenant on 16 February 1901. He was seconded to take a course of instruction at the School of Gunnery in 1903. He was awarded the CB in 1937 and KBE in 1944. 13th (North Canterbury And Westland) Regiment
The 13th (North Canterbury and Westland) Regiment was a territorial infantry regiment of the New Zealand Military Forces. It was formed in 1911 from various volunteer corps raised during the second half of the nineteenth century. Men from the regiment saw combat in the First World War as part of the Canterbury Infantry Regiment. It was amalgamated with the 12th (Nelson and Marlborough) Regiment to form the 2nd Battalion, Canterbury Regiment in 1921, which was redesignated as the 1st Battalion, Nelson, Marlborough and West Coast Regiment in 1923. In many of the world's military establishments, a brevet ( or ) was a warrant giving a commissioned officer a higher rank title as a reward for gallantry or meritorious conduct but may not confer the authority, precedence, or pay of real rank. An officer so promoted was referred to as being brevetted (for example, "he was brevetted major general"). The promotion would be noted in the officer's title (for example, "Bvt. Maj. Gen. Joshua L. Chamberlain" or "Bvt. Col. Arthur MacArthur").
