Arthur Murphy (broadcaster)
Arthur Murphy (4 June 1928 – 7 February 2019) was an Irish television and radio broadcaster. He was best known for presenting ''Mailbag''. Early life Murphy was born in East Wall, Dublin, the elder of two sons born to Jack and Mary Murphy. He attended Saint Columba's National School by North Strand Church. He entered Trinity College Dublin and completed a four-year honours degree course in Modern history and Political Science graduating in 1949 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, and then the Higher Diploma in Education. He was also a Master of Arts. Career Abroad In addition to singing, Murphy played piano and church organ. Following graduation from university, he moved to London to pursue a singing career and supported himself with a job as a school master. Hearing about a BBC television series, '' Music for You'', he contacted the office of its presenter, conductor and producer, Eric Robinson who gave him an audition for the chorus, then offered him solo spots in the series ... Mailbag
''Mailbag'' is an Irish TV programme which was presented by Arthur Murphy and broadcast on RTÉ One for a fourteen-year period, from 1982 to 1996. The presentation, which was initially 10 minutes in length, dealt with viewers letters concerning RTÉ TV programmes and broadcasting in general. The programme later became established in a half-hour Saturday-evening time slot. Desmond John Wilcox (21 May 1931 – 6 September 2000) was a British television producer, documentary filmmaker, journalist and television executive. He worked at the BBC and ITV during his career and was producer of series such as '' This Week'', '' Man Alive'', and ''That's Life!''. Southern Television
Southern Television was the ITV broadcasting licence holder for the South and South-East of England from 30 August 1958 to 31 December 1981. The company was launched as 'Southern Television Limited' and the title 'Southern Television' was consistently used on-air throughout its life. However, in 1966, during the application process for contracts running from 1968, the company renamed itself 'Southern Independent Television Limited', a title which was used until 1980 when the company reverted to its original corporate name. Westward Television was the first ITV franchise-holder for the South West of England. It held the franchise from 29 April 1961 until 31 December 1981. After a difficult start, Westward Television provided a popular, distinctive and highly regarded service to its region, until public boardroom squabbles led to its franchise not being renewed by the IBA. Westward launched the career of many broadcasters who became well known nationally, won numerous awards for its programming, and heavily influenced its successor, TSW. ''Top of the Pops'' (''TOTP'') is a British Record chart, music chart television programme, made by the BBC and originally broadcast weekly between 1January 1964 and 30 July 2006. The programme was the world's longest-running weekly music show. For most of its history, it was broadcast on Thursday evenings on BBC One. Each show consisted of performances of some of the week's best-selling popular music records, usually excluding any tracks moving down the chart, including a rundown of that week's singles chart. This was originally the Top 20, though this varied throughout the show's history. The Top 30 was used from 1969, and the Top 40 from 1984. Dusty Springfield's "I Only Want to Be with You" was the first song featured on ''TOTP'', while the Rolling Stones were the first band to perform, with "I Wanna Be Your Man". ''Thank Your Lucky Stars'' was a British television pop music show made by ABC Weekend TV, and broadcast on ITV from 1961 to 1966. Of all the show's presenters, Brian Matthew is perhaps the best remembered. Many of the leading pop groups of the time performed on it. As well as featuring British artists, it often included American guest stars. It would appear from the surviving footage that the bands mimed their latest 45. Occasionally a band was allowed to do two numbers (possibly the A-side and B-side sides of their latest single or an EP or LP track); bands of a higher status such as The Beatles or The Rolling Stones would sometimes play up to as many as four numbers. A typical 1961 programme listing included The Dale Sisters, Adam Faith, John Leyton, The Brook Brothers, Geoff Goddard and Dion. ABC Television is the general name for the national television services of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). Until an organisational restructure in 2017/2018, ABC Television was also the name of a division of the ABC. The name was also used to refer to the first and for many years the only national ABC channel, before it was renamed ABC1 and then again to ABC TV.
