Arthur L. Selland
Arthur L. Selland (December 31, 1905 – December 5, 1963) was an American politician, and mayor of Fresno, California from 1958 to 1963. Early life and family Selland was born on December 31, 1905, to Henrik "Henry" Augustin Alfsen Selland and Helga Marie Christine Anderson in Flaxton, North Dakota, the eldest son and second of eleven children. Both parents immigrated with their families from Norway and settled in the area of the Canada–United States border in North Dakota and Minnesota. Arthur and his family moved to California around 1910 originally settling in Shasta County. On October 1, 1927, Selland married Ceclia Victoria in Jackson County, Oregon. By 1935, the Sellands moved to Fresno where Arthur worked for Bank of America in the Bank of Italy Regional Office. Selland Arena
Selland Arena is a multi-purpose arena built in 1966 that makes up part of a four-venue complex of the Fresno Convention and Entertainment Center in Fresno, California. It is named after former Fresno mayor Arthur L. Selland and has had over 10 million people walk through its doors in its over 50-year history. The arena originally had a 6,582 seating capacity, but a expansion project in 1981 increased the seating to its current capacity of 10,132. Before the 1997-1998 Fresno State basketball season, capacity was increased to 10,220. The Selland Arena underwent an additional $15 million renovation in November 2006, that included the installation of new seats, a new video replay scoreboard, message boards and a new ice-cooling system for hockey games. Fulton Mall (Fresno)
The Fulton Mall was a six-block corridor in downtown Fresno, California which was closed to traffic in 1964 and made into a pedestrians only mall. Despite opening to much fanfare, the downtown mall suffered from the city's suburban expansion, especially the opening of the Fashion Fair Mall six miles to the north. By the 1980s, most storefronts on the mall were empty and plans to renovate the mall were discussed. In 2017, car traffic was reintroduced to the street after most the public art and amenities had been relocated to sidewalk areas. The mall was an early example of the design intent and masterplan-oriented thought process of shopping mall pioneer Victor Gruen, whose ideas were emulated, albeit in a modified form, across the United States.
