Arthur L. Newton
Arthur Lewis Newton (January 31, 1883 – July 19, 1950) was an American athlete who competed mainly in the distance events. He was born in Upton, Massachusetts and died in Worcester, Massachusetts. Biography He participated in the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris in the 2,500 metre steeplechase finishing 4th and in the marathon finishing 5th. He also competed for the United States in the 1904 Summer Olympics held in St. Louis, United States in the 4 mile team where he won the gold medal with his teammates George Underwood, Paul Pilgrim, 800 meter silver medalist Howard Valentine, and David Munson. Upton, Massachusetts
Upton is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. It was first settled in 1728. The population was given as exactly 8,000 at the 2020 census. History Upton was originally the home of the Nipmuc, who inhabited most of central Massachusetts. The town was first settled in 1728. Residents in outlying areas of surrounding towns were finding it difficult to fulfil the obligation to attend church every Sunday, so they petitioned the state for creation of a new town central to their homes, and in 1735 Upton was incorporated, taking land from Hopkinton, Mendon, Uxbridge, and Sutton. Upton was home to a number of members of the Taft family, including an American Revolutionary War soldier named Samuel Taft, who was born there. David Curtiss Munson
David Curtiss Munson (May 19, 1884 – September 17, 1953) was an American athlete who competed in the 1904 Summer Olympics. He competed for the United States in the 1904 Summer Olympics held in St Louis, United States in the 4 mile team where he won the gold medal with his team mates Arthur Newton, George Underwood, Paul Pilgrim and Howard Valentine. In the 1500 metres event he finished fourth. He also participated in the 2590 metre steeplechase competition where he finished sixth. He won back-to-back one-mile run titles at the outdoor IC4A championships in 1904 and again in 1905, and set the world record in the mile-and-a-half run in Madison Square Garden in 1905.
