Arthur Kampela
Arthur Kampela is a Brazilian-American composer, guitarist, and songwriter. Compositions Though Kampela has been associated with the New Complexity movement, his style evolves out of extreme extended-technique improvisational practices which remap the ergonomics of one instrument onto another (percussion onto guitar, or guitar onto viola). An important aspect of Kampela's music is his development of ''micro-metric modulation'', a formula for precisely controlled transition from any polyrhythm to any other polyrhythm, without either of the tempos of the respective polyrhythms being directly related. (He has also participated in activities that revive the theories and practices of Swiss-Brazilian musician Walter Smetak.) Kampela's rhythmic and timbral techniques are sometimes framed by a reference to Theatre of the Absurd and combined with electronics. New Complexity
New Complexity is a label principally applied to composers seeking a "complex, multi-layered interplay of evolutionary processes occurring simultaneously within every dimension of the musical material". Origins Though often atonal, highly abstract, and dissonant in sound, New Complexity music is most readily characterized by the use of techniques which require complex musical notation. This includes extended techniques, complex and often unstable textures, microtonality, highly disjunct melodic contour, complex layered rhythms, abrupt changes in texture, and so on. It is also characterized, in contrast to the music of the immediate post–World War II serialists, by the frequent reliance of its composers on poetic conceptions, very often implied in the titles of individual works and work-cycles. Ursula Mamlok
Ursula Mamlok (February 1, 1923 – May 4, 2016) was a German-born American composer and teacher. Education and influences Mamlok was born as Ursula Meyer in Berlin, Germany, into a Jewish family, and studied piano and composition with Professor Gustav Ernest and Emily Weissgerber until her family fled Nazi Germany following the nationwide pogrom in 1938. Due to American immigration quotas, the family moved to Guayaquil, Ecuador. Ursula emigrated alone to New York City in 1940 to attend the Mannes School of Music, which had offered her full scholarship on the basis of one of her compositions. Her parents followed in 1941. She became an American citizen in 1945. During four years at the Mannes School Mamlok studied under the direction of George Szell. She received a bachelor's and master's degree at the Manhattan School of Music in the 1950s, studying with Vittorio Giannini. Gian Marco Ciampa
Gian Marco Ciampa (born 29 May 1990) is an Italian classical and electric guitarist. Biography Early life Gian Marco Ciampa was born in Rome in 1990. He started playing classical guitar at the age of 10, inspired by his older brother. He was quickly acclaimed a prodigy by the critics. In 2006 he made an appearance in a TV programme on the Rai 1 channel. His first guitar teachers were Fernando Lepri and Fabrizio Verile. Education During his formation period, Ciampa studied with numerous guitar teachers, including Arturo Tallini, Paolo Pegoraro, Oscar Ghiglia, Adriano del Sal, and Bruno Battisti D'Amario. He graduated from Conservatorio Santa Cecilia in Rome, and attended lessons at the Chigiana Musical Academy and Segovia Guitar Academy.
