Arthur Hill, 2nd Baron Sandys
Lieutenant-General Arthur Moyses William Hill, 2nd Baron Sandys (10 January 1792 – 16 July 1860), styled as Lord Arthur Hill until 1836, was an Anglo-Irish soldier and politician. Background Hill was the second son of Arthur Hill, 2nd Marquess of Downshire, and Mary, daughter and heiress of Colonel the Honourable Martin Sandys, son of Samuel Sandys, 1st Baron Sandys. His mother was created Baroness Sandys in her own right in 1802, with remainder to her younger sons. Military service He joined the army in 1809 as a Cornet in the 10th Hussars. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1810 and to captain in 1813. He served in the Peninsular War, including at the Battles of Vittoria and Pampeluna. He served in the Battle of Waterloo as one of Wellington's aides de camp, with the rank of captain. He was supposedly the fattest young man in the British Army. Frederick William Robert Stewart, 4th Marquess of Londonderry (1805–1872), styled Viscount Castlereagh from 1822 to 1854, was a British nobleman and Tory politician. He was briefly Vice-Chamberlain of the Household under Sir Robert Peel between December 1834 and April 1835. Baron Sandys () is a title that has been created three times, once in the Peerage of England, once in the Peerage of Great Britain and once in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. The first creation, as Baron Sandys, ''of The Vyne'', in Hampshire, was in the Peerage of England in 1523 for William Sandys, the favourite of King Henry VIII. It passed through several generations of his descendants until it fell into abeyance circa 1683 at the death of the eighth Baron, in which state it has remained since. The second creation, as Baron Sandys, ''of Ombersley in the County of Worcester'', was in the Peerage of Great Britain in 1743 for Samuel Sandys, the former Chancellor of the Exchequer. This title became extinct on the death of his son Edwin, the second Baron, in 1797.
