Arthur Girling
Arthur Girling (1807 – June 1849) was an English people, English first-class cricketer and umpire (cricket), umpire. Girling was born at Burton upon Trent in 1807. He made his debut in first-class cricket for the North of England cricket team, North against the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) at Lord's in 1841, with Girling also featuring in the return fixture at Burton-on-Trent Cricket Ground, Burton-on-Trent. He next played first-class cricket in 1845, when he appeared for Manchester Cricket Club, Manchester against Yorkshire county cricket teams, Yorkshire at Moss Lane Cricket Ground, Manchester. He played first-class cricket for Manchester until 1848, making six appearances. Playing as a bowler for Manchester, he took a total of 34 wickets at an bowling average, average of 11.05, with best figures of 6 for 32. Burton Upon Trent
Burton upon Trent, also known as Burton-on-Trent or simply Burton, is a market town in the borough of East Staffordshire in the county of Staffordshire, England, close to the border with Derbyshire. In cricket, a five-wicket haul (also known as a "five–for" or "fifer") occurs when a bowler takes five or more wickets in a single innings. This is regarded by critics as a notable achievement, equivalent to a century from a batsman. Taking a five-wicket haul at Lord's earns the bowler a place on the Lord's honours boards. Sheffield Cricket Club
The Sheffield Cricket Club was founded in the 18th century and soon began to play a key role in the development of cricket in northern England. It was the direct forerunner of Yorkshire County Cricket Club and some of the teams fielded by Sheffield were styled Yorkshire. In cricket, a player's bowling average is the number of runs they have conceded per wicket taken. The lower the bowling average is, the better the bowler is performing. It is one of a number of statistics used to compare bowlers, commonly used alongside the economy rate and the strike rate to judge the overall performance of a bowler. When a bowler has taken only a small number of wickets, their bowling average can be artificially high or low, and unstable, with further wickets taken or runs conceded resulting in large changes to their bowling average.
