Arthur Fisher (British Army Officer)
Major-General Arthur Francis Fisher, (11 July 1899 – 28 August 1972) was a British Army officer who served as acting General Officer Commanding 1st Armoured Division during the Second World War. Military career After attending the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, Fisher was commissioned into the Royal Field Artillery on 6 June 1918. He attended the Staff College, Camberley from 1935 to 1936. He became commanding officer of the East Riding of Yorkshire Yeomanry in 1940 and went on to see action in North Africa, becoming commander of 1st Armoured Brigade in March 1942, commander of 4th Armoured Brigade in June 1942 and commander of 22nd Armoured Brigade in July 1942. He briefly became acting General Officer Commanding 1st Armoured Division when Major-General Alexander Gatehouse was wounded in action in North Africa on 22 July 1942 and remained in the role until relieved on 15 August 1942. Fisher & Fisher was an architectural firm based in Denver, Colorado named for partners William Ellsworth Fisher (1871–1937) and Arthur Addison Fisher (1878–1965). The firm was founded in 1892 by William Ellsworth Fisher as William Fisher, Architect. After ten years in practice alone, mainly designing starter homes, he partnered with Daniel Riggs Huntington from 1901 to 1905 as Fisher & Huntington, during which time the firm designed increasingly expensive residences and also commercial buildings. Arthur Stanley Theodore Fisher (1906–1989) was a mid-20th-century Church of England priest and writer. He wrote a number of poems, religious works and local histories as A. S. T. Fisher and one novel under the pseudonym Michael Scarrott. Family Fisher was the son of Reverend Arthur Bryan Fisher (1870–1955), a Church of England priest who was a Church Missionary Society missionary in the Uganda Protectorate. Fisher was married and had a daughter. Education Fisher studied at Christ Church, Oxford, where he lived on the same stair as W. H. Auden. The two students had frequent late-night arguments about religion, and in 1925, Fisher reintroduced Auden to Christopher Isherwood.
