Arthur Drakeford Jr
Arthur Harold Finch Drakeford (8 February 1904 – 13 June 1959) was an Australian politician. He was born in Benalla to Arthur Drakeford and Ellen Warrington. He was a fitter and turner on the railways before an eye injury led to him becoming a clerk. Around 1934 he married Violet Amelia Heldon, with whom he had two sons. Like his father he was active in the Labor Party, serving as president of the party's Essendon and West Coburg branches and secretary of the Pascoe Vale branch. In 1945 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the member for Essendon, but he was defeated in 1947. He returned to the Assembly in 1955 as the member for Pascoe Vale; with that seat's abolition in 1958 he again contested Essendon, but was defeated. Benalla, Victoria
Benalla is a small city located on the Broken River gateway to the High Country north-eastern region of Victoria, Australia, about north east of the state capital Melbourne. At the the population was 10,822. It is the administrative centre for the Rural City of Benalla local government area. History Prior to the European settlement of Australia, the Benalla region was populated by the Taungurung people, an Indigenous Australian people. A 1906 history recounts that prior to white settlement "as many as 400 blacks would meet together in the vicinity of Benalla to hold a corrobboree". Arthur Drakeford
Arthur Samuel Drakeford (26 April 1878 – 9 June 1957) was an Australian politician who served as a member of the House of Representatives from 1934 to 1955, representing the Labor Party. He served as Minister for Air and Minister for Civil Aviation from 1941 to 1949, and during World War II was the minister responsible for the Royal Australian Air Force. He was also responsible for the establishment of the domestic carrier Trans Australia Airlines and for the nationalisation of Qantas. Early life Drakeford was born in the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy and his first job was cleaning railway engines at Benalla. In May 1902 he married Ellen Tyrie, but she died in 1906. The electoral district of Essendon is an electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. It was first created in 1904 after the abolition of the larger Essendon and Flemington electorate, and covers some of the north-western suburbs of Melbourne, including Essendon, Moonee Ponds and Ascot Vale. The electorate was abolished in 1955, and Ascot Vale created, but in 1958, Ascot Vale was abolished and Essendon re-created. Essendon was held by the Liberals during the Bolte and Hamer governments, usually due to preferences from the Democratic Labor Party. Samuel Merrifield (6 February 1904 – 24 August 1982) was an Australian politician. He was born at Moonee Ponds to carpenter William Merrifield and Sarah Semmens. He attended local state schools and Essendon High School, becoming a qualified surveyor in 1925. He worked with the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board until 1930, but was unemployed from 1931 to 1935 when he resumed his previous job. On 7 March 1936 he married Margaret Lillian Smith. After a brief stint with the State Electricity Commission he worked for the Department of the Interior from 1940 to 1943. A Labor Party member from 1922, he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly in 1943 as the member for Essendon.
