Arthur Coates (footballer)
Arthur Coates (10 August 1882 – 13 March 1955) was an English professional association football, footballer who played as a Defender (association football), full-back for various clubs in the early years of the 20th century. Football career Coates was born in Feetham, North Yorkshire but started his football career in the Greater Manchester area, first with Salford United F.C., Salford United before joining Heywood United F.C., Heywood United of the Lancashire Combination. In 1910, he was spotted by former England national football team, England international Arthur Chadwick, then manager of Southern Football League, Southern League team Exeter City F.C., Exeter City. After a season at Exeter, Coates moved along the south coast to join fellow Southern League team, Southampton F.C., Southampton as a replacement for right-back Jack Eastham who had just retired. Southern Football League
The Southern League is a men's football competition featuring semi-professional clubs from the South and Midlands of England. Together with the Isthmian League and the Northern Premier League it forms levels seven and eight of the English football league system. The structure of the Southern League has changed several times since its formation in 1894, and currently there are 84 clubs which are divided into four divisions. The Central and South Divisions are at step 3 of the National League System (NLS), and are feeder divisions, mainly to the National League South but also to the National League North. Richard Brookes (floruit, fl. 1908–1920) was an English professional association football, footballer who played as a Defender (association football), full-back for various clubs in the early years of the 20th century. Football career Brookes was born in Reading, Berkshire and after a career in the Army, with the King's Royal Rifle Corps and the Royal Garrison Artillery in Essex, in 1910 he found employment at the Eastleigh Works of the London and South Western Railway. He was playing for Eastleigh Athletic F.C., Eastleigh Athletic in the Hampshire League where he was spotted by scouts from his home-town club, Reading F.C., Reading of the Southern Football League, Southern League, joining them in March 1911. Northampton () is a market town and civil parish in the East Midlands of England, on the River Nene, north-west of London and south-east of Birmingham. In the sport of association football, a defender is an outfield position whose primary role is to stop attacks during the game and prevent the opposition from scoring. Arthur Chadwick
Arthur Chadwick (July 1875 – 21 March 1936) was a professional footballer whose playing career as a centre-half included spells at Portsmouth and Southampton, before going on to be manager at Exeter City, Reading and Southampton. He also made two appearances for England in 1900. Playing career Chadwick was born in Church, Lancashire and started his career playing in his native county for Accrington and Burton Swifts. When he signed for Southampton in May 1897, little was known about him. He travelled to Southampton for a trial accompanied by Bob Brown of Burton Wanderers. Southampton Chadwick initially played at right-half, but was not a great success until he was converted to a centre-half in which position his career took off.
