Artemisa Xakriabá
Artemisa Barbosa Ribeiro (known as Artemisa Xakriabá) is a Brazilian human rights activist. A leader of the Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil, her work focuses on the Amazon jungle and environmental destruction. Artemisa Xakriabá belongs to the Xacriabas indigenous people located in the north of the state of Minas Gerais, in the southeast of Brazil. She has expressed the problems suffered by her community in the fight to protect its territory from environmental damage from mining. She is a representative of the indigenous and traditional communities that are part of the Global Alliance of Territorial Communities. On several occasions, she denounced Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro for his policies regarding the Amazon and for the government's refusal to take measures to protect the Amazon forest. São João Das Missões
São João das Missões is a municipality in the north of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. As of 2020 the population was 13,125 in a total area of 675 km². The elevation is 501 meters. It became a municipality in 1997. São João das Missões is part of the statistical microregion of Januária. It is located 21 kilometers southwest of Manga, which is on the São Francisco River. To the south is the Parque Nacional Caverna do Peruaçu. The nearest regional center is Januária. Twenty percent of the population lived in the urban area and 40 percent was of the Xacriabá tribe. 2019 UN Climate Action Summit
The 2019 UN Climate Action Summit was held at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York City on 23 September 2019. The UN 2019 Climate Summit convened on the theme, "Climate Action Summit 2019: A Race We Can Win. A Race We Must Win." The goal of the summit was to further climate action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to prevent the mean global temperature from rising by more than above preindustrial levels. Sixty countries were expected to "announce steps to reduce emissions and support populations most vulnerable to the climate crisis" including France, a number of other European countries, small island countries and India. Célia Nunes Correa (born 9 May 1990), better known as Célia Xakriabá , is an indigenous educator and activist of the Xakriabá people of Brazil. She is best known for holding debates and lectures at universities in Brazil promoting, among other things, advancement of the status and rights of indigenous women, indigenous land rights, and indigenous education. Early life Xakriabá was born in the municipality of São João das Missões in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. She attended school at the Xukurnuk Indigenous State School. Later, she both attended and taught indigenous education at the Federal University of Minas Gerais in 2013.
