Artarmon
Artarmon is a suburb on the lower North Shore of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia, 9 kilometres north-west of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the City of Willoughby. History In 1794 and 1796, land grants were given to soldiers and emancipists to encourage farming. The most important farm was owned by William Gore (1765–1845), who was the provost marshal under NSW Governor William Bligh. Gore received a grant of in 1810, and named it Artarmon after his family estate in Ireland. Gore Hill is named after him. The Chatswood South Uniting Church, located at the corner of Mowbray Road and the Pacific Highway, designed by architect and later mayor of Manly, Thomas Rowe, was built in 1871. William Gore (provost Marshal)
William Gore (1765 – 1845) was a provost marshal in the Colony of New South Wales during the early 1800s. During the Rum rebellion he was imprisoned for his support of Governor William Bligh. Gore was released after two years but later in his career was again incarcerated for unpaid debts and for wilfully shooting a soldier. Gore was the first British settler of Artarmon, which is now a suburb in the Lower North Shore of Sydney. The suburb of Gore Hill, which was part of his original Artarmon land grant, is named after him. Early life Gore was born into the reputable Anglo-Irish Gore family of County Sligo in Ireland. He was briefly imprisoned by Irish rebels during the 1798 Irish Rebellion. The City of Willoughby is a local government area on the Lower North Shore of Northern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is located north of the Sydney central business district. It was first proclaimed in October 1865 as the ''Municipality of North Willoughby''. St Leonards is a suburb on the lower North Shore of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. St Leonards is located north-west of the Sydney central business district and lies across the local government areas of Municipality of Lane Cove, North Sydney Council and the City of Willoughby. History St Leonards was named after English statesman Viscount Sydney of St Leonards. Originally, St Leonards applied to the whole area from the present suburb of North Sydney to Gore Hill. The Chatswood South Uniting Church is a heritage-listed Uniting church at 518 Pacific Highway, Lane Cove North in the Lane Cove Council local government area of New South Wales, Australia. It was designed by Thomas Rowe and possibly a Mr Morrow also and built by Bryson, Leet, Johnson & Montgomery. Naremburn is a suburb on the lower North Shore of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Naremburn is located 6 kilometres north of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the City of Willoughby.
