Art Powell (coach)
Arthur L. Powell (May 14, 1884 – March 10, 1969) was an American basketball and football player and coach. Early life and playing career Powell was born in Toronto, Ontario in 1884 and was brought to Buffalo, New York as an infant. As a teenager, Powell learned the game of basketball from the Buffalo Germans team. The Germans became the most-feared team in the country, playing against the best pro and amateur teams in the world, and winning with relative ease. In 1961, the Buffalo Germans basketball team was enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame. After graduating from Masten Park High School in Buffalo, he starred in basketball, baseball and football at Syracuse University in the early 1900s graduating in 1907. Although he was five feet four inches tall, he jumped center for the Syracuse basketball team and was twice named captain. 1917 College Football Season
The 1917 college football season had no clear-cut champion, with the ''Official NCAA Division I Football Records Book'' listing Georgia Tech as national champions, the South's first. Pittsburgh, Ohio State, Texas A&M, Williams, and Washington State were also undefeated, and one-loss Navy was strong. Tech coach John Heisman challenged Pitt coach Pop Warner to a postseason contest to determine a national champion, but as such a match did not occur until the next season, Tech was named national champion. Nat Holman (October 19, 1896 – February 12, 1995) was an American professional basketball player and college coach. He is a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and is the only coach to lead his team to NCAA and National Invitation Tournament (NIT) championships in the same season.
