''Lie with Me'' (french: Arrête avec tes mensonges, lit=Stop with Your Lies) is a novel by French writer Philippe Besson. It was published in 2017 to critical acclaim, and became a bestseller in France. It was translated into English by Molly Ringwald under the title ''Lie with Me'' and was lauded by English-language reviewers. Plot Set in 1984 in rural France, in the small town of Barbezieux, the novel recounts the teenage love affair between the narrator and his schoolmate Thomas Andrieu. Impact and Adaptations The novel became a bestseller in France. The novel won the ''Prix Psychologies du Roman inspiran'' and the ''Prix Maison de la Presse''. The novel was a finalist for the Prix Orange du Livre. Besson, in a piece published in January 2020, writes about the significance to him of the novel ''The Lover (Duras novel), The Lover'' by Marguerite Duras. ''Philippe Besson'' (born 29 January 1967 in Barbezieux-Saint-Hilaire, Charente) is a French writer. Life In 1999, Besson, a law graduate, was inspired to write his first novel, ''En l'absence des hommes'' while reading of accounts of ex-servicemen during the First World War. The novel, with its daring inclusion of Marcel Proust as a central character, won the Prix Emmanuel Roblès. Besson's second novel, ''Son Frère'' was shortlisted for the Prix Femina, and adapted for cinema by Patrice Chéreau in 2003. The film was well received and won the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival.
