Arrondissement Of Brussels-Periphery
The Arrondissement of Brussels-Periphery ( nl, Arrondissement Brussel-Randgemeenten) was an administrative arrondissement in the Belgian Province of Brabant. It existed from 1963 to 1971 and comprised the six municipalities in the Brussels periphery ( nl, Brusselse Rand; french: Périphérie bruxelloise) with language facilities. History The arrondissement was created in 1963, when the bilingual Arrondissement of Brussels was split up into three administrative arrondissements: the bilingual Arrondissement of Brussels-Capital, the unilingual Dutch-speaking Arrondissement of Halle-Vilvoorde and a peculiar arrondissement that officially didn't have a name, but was commonly referred to as Brussels-Periphery, and which comprised the six municipalities with language facilities around Brussels. Arrondissements of Belgium are subdivisions below the provinces of Belgium. There are administrative, judicial and electoral arrondissements. These may or may not relate to identical geographical areas. Belgium, a federalized state, geographically consists of three regions, of which only Flanders and Wallonia are subdivided into five provinces each; Brussels is neither a province nor is it part of one. Wemmel
Wemmel (; ) is a municipality located in the Belgian province of Flemish Brabant. The municipality only comprises the town of Wemmel proper. On January 1, 2018, Wemmel had a total population of 16,347. The total area is 8.74 km² which gives a population density of 1,870 inhabitants per km². The official language is Dutch, as everywhere in Flanders. In 1954, however, special linguistic ''facilities'' were given to local French-speakers. Linkebeek (; ) is a Belgian municipality in Flanders, part of the province of Flemish Brabant, and in the administrative district of Halle-Vilvoorde. The municipality only comprises the town of Linkebeek proper. As of 1 January 2006, Linkebeek has a total population of 4,759. The total area is 4.15 km² which gives a population density of 1,147 inhabitants per km². Language and politics The official language is Dutch with French facilities. Drogenbos (; ) is a municipality located in the Belgian province of Flemish Brabant. The municipality only comprises the town of Drogenbos proper. On January 1, 2018, Drogenbos had a total population of 5,599. The total area is 2.49 km² (0.96 sq mi) which gives a population density of 2,248 inhabitants per km² (5,701/sq mi). Belgium comprises 581 municipalities ( nl, gemeenten; french: communes; german: Gemeinden), 300 of them grouped into five provinces in Flanders and 262 others in five provinces in Wallonia, while the remaining 19 are in the Brussels Capital Region, which is not divided in provinces. There are 27 municipalities with language facilities ( nl, faciliteitengemeenten; french: communes à facilités; german: Fazilitäten-Gemeinden) in Belgium which must offer linguistic services to residents in Dutch, French, or German in addition to their single official languages. All other municipalities – with the exception of those in the bilingual Brussels region – are unilingual and only offer services in their official languages, either Dutch or French. The Halle-Vilvoorde Arrondissement () is one of the two administrative arrondissements in the Belgian province of Flemish Brabant. It almost completely surrounds the Brussels-Capital Region and lies to the west of the other arrondissement in the province, the Leuven Arrondissement.
