Arnott, Wisconsin
Arnott is an unincorporated community located in Stockton, Portage County, Wisconsin, United States. It is situated at the intersection of County Hwys. B and J. History In 1872, the Green Bay and Western Railroad laid tracks through a portion of Arnott. During 1881 and 1882, William Arnott, Joseph Bremmer, and Calvin Richmond canvassed the countryside, raising money to build a railroad depot. The depot and the settlement around it were named after Arnott, a local farmer who served as chairman of the town of Stockton and the Portage County Board and who was elected to the Wisconsin Legislature in 1876. Geography Arnott is located in central Wisconsin, approximately four miles east of Plover, four miles south-southwest of Custer, and seven miles west of Amherst (Lat: 44° 27' 26.0", Lon: -89° 26' 48.5"). Miss Daphne Arnott commenced production with a Formula 3 car designed by G. Thornton that used a tubular ladder frame with a torsion bar suspension. The model achieved success both in racing as well as in breaking Class 1 records at Montlhery in 1953. A supercharged Austin A30-engined sports car was sold from 1954, and a 1,098 cc Coventry-Climax model was introduced in time for the 1955 race at Le Mans. This model employed spring damper units operated by lengthy control arm wishbones from the wheels on the opposite side. This car crashed during practice. Arnott's Biscuits Limited is an Australian producer of biscuits and snack food. Founded in 1865, they are the largest producer of biscuits in Australia and a subsidiary of KKR. History In 1847, Scottish immigrant William Arnott opened a bakery in Morpeth, New South Wales. Later in 1865 he moved to a bakery on Hunter Street, Newcastle, providing bread, pies and biscuits for the townspeople and the ships docking at the local port. Until 1975 the company was under family control with the descendants of William Arnott, including Halse Rogers Arnott and Geoffrey H. Arnott, acting as Chairman. Arnott's, in common with the majority of Australian biscuit manufacturers, operated primarily in its home state, New South Wales, but has manufacturing plants in Virginia, Queensland (manufactures only plain, cream and savoury biscuits) and Shepparton, Victoria. Arnott's Shapes
Arnott's Shapes are a popular line of savoury biscuits produced by Arnott's in Australia and New Zealand. They were first introduced in Victoria by Brockhoff Biscuits in 1954. Savoury was the first flavour, followed soon by barbecue, chicken crimpy, and onion. They were originally made in the shape of potato chips, until bakers realised they were too difficult to cut and were a waste of dough. In 1974, they switched to the flat biscuits, which are sold today. Arnott's Shapes are sold in different packaging including multi-pack bags and boxes. In Australia, during the late-1900's, Arnott's reduced the box packaging size of the core flavours from 250 grams to 200 grams. During 2011, Arnott's further reduced the packaging size from 200 grams to 175–185 grams. The reason for the name "Shapes" is because of the variety of the individual biscuit shapes, depending on the flavour. Arnotts was a department store in Glasgow, Scotland. It became part of the House of Fraser and one of their group brands. History The store was opened by John Arnott as a subsidiary of Arnott, Cannock & Co of Dublin in 1850 in Jamaica Street as a drapery. During 1886 the partnership between Arnott and Cannock was dissolved and Thomas Arnott, half brother of John, ran the store under the name of Arnott & Co.. In 1864, the building was acquired from the trustees of the City of Glasgow Bank, expanding the store so by 1874 it was a department store. In 1891 the business was incorporated and by 1906 the store frontage was remodelled. George Arnott Walker Arnott of Arlary (6 February 1799 – 17 April 1868) was a Scottish botanist. Early life George Arnott Walker Arnott was born in Edinburgh in 1799, the son of David Walker Arnott of Arlary. He attended Milnathort Parish School then the High School of Edinburgh. He studied law in Edinburgh. Career Walker Arnott became a botanist, holding the position of Regius Professor of Botany in the University of Glasgow from 1845 to 1868.
