Hugo Arnot
Hugo Arnot of Balcormo (8 December 1749 – 20 November 1786) was a Scottish advocate, writer, and campaigner. Life Arnot was born Hugo Pollock on 8 December 1749 in Leith, where his father was a merchant. He adopted his mother's maiden name, Arnot, after succeeding to her property of Balcormo in Fife. He became an advocate on 5 December 1772. From at least 1773 until his death he lived on Princes Street, where he was one of its first residents. In 1779 he published his ''History of Edinburgh'' with a second issue with added illustrations later in the year, a second edition appeared in 1788 and a third in 1816. Arnot quoted from manuscript sources in Edinburgh City Archives and the National Records of Scotland including a household book of James IV and the accounts of Robert Jousie. Frederick Stanley Arnot
Frederick Stanley Arnot (12 September 1858 – 14 May 1914) was a British missionary who did much to establish missions in what are now Angola, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Early years Arnot was born in Glasgow on 12 September 1858. His family lived in the town of Hamilton, southeast of Glasgow, for several years. There he became close to his neighbours, the family of the medical missionary David Livingstone. He looked up to Livingstone as a hero and determined to emulate him. He felt practical skills would be needed in his future missionary career. At fourteen he left school to become an apprentice joiner in the Glasgow shipyards. Arnot was brought up in the Church of Scotland, but became a member of the Plymouth Brethren. First expedition In July 1881, aged 22, Arnot embarked for Cape Town. Elizabeth Jane Arnot (born 1 March 1996) is a Scottish professional footballer who plays as a forward for Rangers in the Scottish Women's Premier League and the Scotland national team. She has previously played for Manchester United, Hibernian and Hutchison Vale. Madeleine Arnot, née MacDonald (born 1950) is a Professor of Sociology of Education at the University of Cambridge, Faculty of Education. She is Director of Studies (Education) at Jesus College. Internationally known for her work on socio-cultural reproduction theory and her use of Basil Bernstein's theory of pedagogy in relation to gender and education. Life Madeleine Arnott gained her MA at the University of Edinburgh and her PhD from the Open University. She began her career as part of the Schooling and Society team at the Open University focusing specifically on social class issues, and she has continued to be interested in the role of education in relation to social inequalities and the promotion of social equality. Powell Peralta is an American skateboard company founded by George Powell and Stacy Peralta in 1978. The company rose to prominence in the 1980s as skateboarding began maturing as a sport. The company featured the Bones Brigade, a team featuring the era's top competitors. Peralta left the company in 1991 and Powell continued to produce skateboard equipment as Powell, Bones Bearings and RollerBones. Robert "Robin" Page Arnot (15 December 1890 – 18 May 1986), best known as R. Page Arnot, was a British Communist journalist and politician. Early years Robert Page Arnot, known to his friends as "Robin", was born in 1890 at Greenock, the son of a newspaper editor. He attended Glasgow University where he helped to form the University Socialist Federation in 1912, along with G.D.H. Cole and others. He also wrote for the ''Labour Leader'', publication of the Independent Labour Party, using the pseudonym "Jack Cade." In 1912 the Fabian socialist Beatrice Webb established a Committee of Enquiry into the future control of industry. Out of this sprang the Fabian Research Department, which later evolved into the Labour Research Department. One of the volunteers attracted by the project was Robin Page Arnot, who became its full-time head in 1914 – a position which he retained until 1926.
