Kiawah Island, South Carolina
Kiawah is a sea island, or barrier island, on the Atlantic coast of the United States. Located southwest of Charleston in Charleston County, South Carolina, it is primarily a private beach and golf resort. It is home to the Kiawah Island Golf Resort, with spacious villas, beaches, large and acclaimed golf courses, and other attractions. Arnoldus Vanderhorst
Arnoldus Vanderhorst (; March 21, 1748 – January 29, 1815) was an American military officer and planter. He was a General officer, general of the South Carolina militia during the American Revolutionary War and served as the governor of South Carolina from 1794 to 1796. Early life and career Born in Christ Church Parish, Vanderhorst took up planting at his Arnoldus Vander Horst House, plantation on the eastern half of Kiawah Island, South Carolina, Kiawah Island in the South Carolina Low Country, Lowcountry. He participated in the American Revolutionary War, Revolutionary War as an officer under the command of Francis Marion. During the war, he also served in the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1776 to 1780 and in the South Carolina Senate from 1780 to 1786. Vanderhorst Row
Vanderhorst Row in Charleston, South Carolina is a three-unit residential building built in 1800 by Arnoldus Vanderhorst, a governor of South Carolina (1792-1794). Each unit is four floors. The units at the north and south end of the range have doors along East Bay Street on the front in addition to doors on the sides of the unified building and exits to the rear. After the Civil War, the use of the building changed, and commercial purposes were installed. The building fell into disrepair before it was bought in 1935 by Josiah E. Smith for a restoration which cost $30,000. The architect for the restoration of the building was Stephen Thomas. The three units rented for $1500 to $1800 a year after the work was completed. As restored, each unit had a living room, dining room, kitchen, breakfast room, and pantry on the first floor; a drawing room, bedroom, and bath on the second; two more bedrooms on the third; and servants' rooms in the attic. Elias Vanderhorst House
The Elias Vanderhorst House at 28 Chapel Street, Charleston, South Carolina, is a four-story mansion house which was built around 1835 as a home for members of the prominent Vanderhorst family of plantation owners. The house Built in the Greek Revival style, the house stands on a high basement and features a porch across the front with six large columns and a double flight of stone steps leading to a piazza. Most of the original late federal woodwork is intact, along with some of the finest examples of wrought-iron in the city. The plot of land was purchased by the eponymous Elias Vanderhorst in 1832 and the house remained in his family for almost a century.
