Arnold Stickley
Arnold Frank Stickley (18 February 1926 – 31 December 1998) was an English professional golfer. He finished tied for 11th place in the 1959 Open Championship, having been joint leader with Fred Bullock after a first round 68. Stickley won the PGA Close Championship in 1960. Mist on the opening morning meant that, with 162 competitors, the opening round could not be completed. The second round was reduced to nine holes to allow it to be completed on the second day. Stickley won a first prize of £275, the Slazenger Trophy, and a special award of £100. Professional Golfer
A professional golfer is somebody who receives payments or financial rewards in the sport of golf that are directly related to their skill or reputation. A person who earns money by teaching or playing golf is traditionally considered a "golf pro," most of whom are teachers/coaches. The professional golfer status is reserved for people who play, rather than teach, golf for a career. In golf, the distinction between amateurs and professionals is rigorously maintained. An amateur who breaches the rules of amateur status may lose their amateur status. A golfer who has lost their amateur status may not play in amateur competitions until amateur status has been reinstated; a professional may not play in amateur tournaments unless the Committee is notified, acknowledges and confirms the participation. 1959 Open Championship
The 1959 Open Championship was the 88th Open Championship, held 1–3 July at Muirfield Golf Links in Gullane, East Lothian, Scotland. Gary Player, age 23, shot a final round of 68 to win the first of his nine major titles, two strokes ahead of runners-up Fred Bullock and Flory Van Donck. It was the first of Player's three Claret Jugs; he won again in 1968 and 1974. Muirfield was originally scheduled to host in 1957, but it was transferred to St. Andrews because of petrol rationing following the "Suez Crisis" in late 1956. Muirfield was subsequently allocated the 1959 Championship. Qualifying took place on 29–30 June, with 18 holes at Muirfield and 18 holes at the number 1 course of Gullane Golf Club. There were no exemptions and the number of qualifiers was limited to a maximum of 100, and ties did not qualify. Fred Bullock (golfer)
George Frederick Bullock (12 August 1918 – November 2006) was an English professional golfer. He died from motor neurone disease. He finished in the top-10 four times in The Open Championship: T-8 in 1938, T-7 in 1950, 8th in 1952, and T-2 in 1959. Until late 1946 he was an assistant professional at Holyhead Golf Club on Anglesey, Wales where his father George was the professional. Aged 17, he was runner-up in the 1936 Welsh Professional Championship at Prestatyn, behind Fred Lloyd. After two years as professional at Otley Golf Club he became playing assistant professional at Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club and then the professional at Glasgow Golf Club in late 1950. PGA Close Championship
The BMW PGA Championship is an annual men's professional golf tournament on the European Tour. It was founded in 1955 by the Professional Golfers' Association, and originally called the British PGA Championship. History The BMW PGA Championship has usually been played each May, on the weekend of the UK's Spring Bank Holiday, over the West Course at the Wentworth Club in Surrey, England. The PGA European Tour has its headquarters at the club and as the tour's home tournament, the BMW PGA Championship is often regarded as the flagship event on the European Tour. The Open Championship
The Open Championship, often referred to as The Open or the British Open, is the oldest golf tournament in the world, and one of the most prestigious. Founded in 1860, it was originally held annually at Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland. Later the venue rotated between a select group of coastal links golf courses in the United Kingdom. It is organised by the R&A. The Open is one of the four men's major golf tournaments, the others being the Masters Tournament, the PGA Championship and the U.S. Open.
