Arnold Mallis
Arnold Mallis (15 October 1910 – 16 January 1984) was an American professor of entomology. He worked as an extension entomologist in Pennsylvania State University and was the author of a popular ''Handbook of Pest Control'' first published in 1945 that continues to be revised and published. Mallis was born in New York. The family moved to California in 1927 and Mallis went to the University of Southern California in 1928 with the idea of training to be a dentist. He however gave up due to the Great Depression and worked in a shipping company for two years. The Great Depression (19291939) was an economic shock that impacted most countries across the world. It was a period of economic depression that became evident after a major fall in stock prices in the United States. The economic contagion began around September and led to the Wall Street stock market crash of October 24 (Black Thursday). It was the longest, deepest, and most widespread depression of the 20th century. Between 1929 and 1932, worldwide gross domestic product (GDP) fell by an estimated 15%.
