Arnold Gerschwiler
Arnold Gerschwiler OBE (28 May 1914 – 22 August 2003) was a Swiss (later, British) figure skating coach. Personal life Gerschwiler was born in Arbon, Switzerland. He was the half-brother of Jacques Gerschwiler and the uncle of Hans Gerschwiler. At the encouragement of Jacques, he moved to London, England. He married Violet Blundell in August 1941. They had two daughters, Stella and Claire, two grandsons and two granddaughters. Gerschwiler lived in Ailsa Road, St Margarets, Twickenham for 53 years. He died on 22 August 2003 at St Anthony's Hospital, Cheam at the age of 89. Career Gerschwiler competed in the British Open Ice-Skating Championships in 1935 and 1936 and joined the staff of the Richmond Ice Rink in 1937. He was head coach there from 1938, and served as director in 1964 until the facility was demolished in 1992. Sjoukje Dijkstra
Sjoukje Rosalinde Dijkstra (, born 28 January 1942) is a Dutch former competitive figure skater. She is the 1964 Olympic champion in ladies' singles, the 1960 Olympic silver medalist, a three-time World champion (1962–1964), five-time European champion (1960–1964), and the six-time Dutch national champion (1959–1964). Personal life Sjoukje Rosalinde Dijkstra was born on 28 January 1942 in Akkrum, Netherlands. She is the daughter of Lou Dijkstra, a speed skater who competed in the 1936 Winter Olympics. She married Karl Kossmayer, with whom she has two daughters, Rosalie and Katja. Career In the 1953–54 season, Dijkstra was awarded her first senior national medal, bronze behind Nellie Maas and Joan Haanappel, and was assigned to her first ISU Championship, the 1954 Europeans in Bolzano, where she placed 19th. The ''Richmond and Twickenham Times'' is a weekly local newspaper that was established in 1873 and is published on Fridays. It covers the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames in south-west London and surrounding areas. Betty Callaway
Betty Daphne Callaway-Fittall, MBE (née Roberts; 22 March 1928 – 27 June 2011) was an English figure skating coach who specialised in ice dancing. She was best known as the coach of Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean, the 1984 Olympic champions, and also trained 1980 world champions Krisztina Regőczy and András Sallay, and 1972 European champions Angelika and Erich Buck. Early life Betty Daphne Roberts was born in Reading, Berkshire on 22 March 1928, the daughter of William and Elizabeth Roberts. She grew up in London, where she attended a convent school. The Professional Skaters Association International is the largest figure skating coaches association in the world. The PSA was founded on August 10, 1938, in Lake Placid, New York, as the American Skaters Guild, just two years (1936) after the Ice Teachers Guild was formed in England by Jacques Gerschwiler, Howard Nicholson, Gladys Hogg and Eric Van De Weyden. On January 21, 1950, at the Broadmoor World Arena in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the American Skaters Guild was reorganized and renamed the Professional Skaters Guild of America. In May 1995, the PSGA once again changed its identity to the Professional Skaters Association, International (PSA). Helmut Seibt
Hellmut Seibt (born 25 June 1929 – 21 July 1992) was an Austrian figure skater. He was the 1952 Olympic silver medalist, 1951 World bronze medalist, a two-time European champion (1951–52), and three-time national champion. Personal life Seibt was born on 25 June 1929 in Vienna. He married figure skater Inge Regner in March 1956. He died on 21 July 1992. Career Seibt began skating at age four, having been advised to take up an outdoor activity after suffering pneumonia. He practiced at the Engelmann club in Hernals, Vienna, under the guidance of Rudolf Kutzer and Karl Schäfer. Seibt was coached by Inge Lind-Solar after World War II. He won his first national medal, silver, in 1947. In 1948, he was sent to his first European Championships, where he placed seventh, and then competed at the 1948 Winter Olympics, finishing ninth. Joan Haanappel (born 13 November 1940) is a Dutch former figure skater and sports presenter for NOS, AVRO, ZDF and Eurosport. She is a three-time European bronze medalist (1958–1960) and a four-time Dutch national champion. Career Skating career Haanappel began skating in 1949 at Houtrust ice skating club in The Hague. Aged 12 years, she competed at her first major international competition, the European Championships in Dortmund, where she finished 14th. She won the first of her four Dutch national titles in 1955.
