Arnold () is a market town and unparished area in the Borough of Gedling in the Ceremonial counties of England, ceremonial county of Nottinghamshire in the East Midlands of England. It is situated to the north-east of Nottingham's city boundary. Arnold has the largest town centre in the Borough of Gedling and the most important town centre in the northeastern part of the conurbation of Nottingham Urban Area, Greater Nottingham. The Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University is a botanical research institution and free public park, located in the Jamaica Plain and Roslindale neighborhoods of Boston, Massachusetts. Established in 1872, it is the oldest public arboretum in North America. The landscape was designed by Charles Sprague Sargent and Frederick Law Olmsted and is the second largest "link" in the Emerald Necklace. Arnold, a census-designated place (CDP) in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, United States, located just outside of the state's capital, Annapolis. It is located 18.78 miles south of Baltimore, and 29.97 miles east of Washington, D.C. The population was 23,106 at the 2010 census. Founded in 1906 by Karl Arnold in Nürnberg, K. Arnold & Co. began its life producing tin toys and related items. They produced an extensive line of model ships, doll house items and other toys. In 1935, K. Arnold & Co. hired Max Ernst as their managing director. Ernst, not to be confused with the German realist artist of the same name, was a significant factor in the future of Arnold. History Nürnberg was badly damaged by allied bombers during World War II, and, at the end of the war, all of the Arnold facilities were in ruins. Postwar production continued at a facility in the Upper Palatinate (Oberpfalz), with the company beginning its slow recovery with the manufacture of window hardware. Arnold is a city in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, United States, within the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The population was 5,157 at the 2010 Census. History Present-day Westmoreland County was part of the hunting reserves of the Iroquois Indians. White colonists began to penetrate the area in the 1750s, and circa 1781 Robert McCrea purchased the land on which Arnold is situated. William Jack acquired the property and later passed it on to Wilson Jack. The area around Arnold was first settled in 1852 by Major Andrew Arnold, who grew up in Kittanning. Arnold is a census-designated place (CDP) in Calaveras County, California, United States. The population was 3,843 at the 2010 census, down from 4,218 at the 2000 census. Arnold is located on State Route 4. History Arnold is named after Bob and Bernice Arnold, who, in 1927 opened the Ebbetts Pass Inn. Prior to that, the community consisted of two large ranches where logging was the main industry. The inn served as a stop for people traveling along the Ebbetts Pass route as well as lodging for those visiting nearby Calaveras Big Trees State Park. In 1928, Camp Wolfeboro was established nearby as a Boy Scout camp and continues to be in operation today. The first post office was opened in 1934. Bernice was its postmistress at one time. In 2015 power lines sparked the Butte Fire, which destroyed 549 homes in nearby communities. ''Arnold'' was a syndicated comic strip by Kevin McCormick that ran at its height in 56 newspapers, including the ''Los Angeles Times'' and the ''Detroit Free Press,'' from December 13, 1982, through April 17, 1988. The strip was characterized by an off-beat sense of humor and random interjections by the title character, Arnold. Motifs The main characters were Arnold Melville, a strange, volatile child; Tommy Jordon, his well-meaning but clueless friend; and Mr. Lester, Arnold and Tommy's schoolteacher. These three were usually the only characters actually seen in the strip, with off-stage voices coming from the other characters (such as parents, bullies, teachers, coaches and other authority figures). Arnold often yelled "AIEEE!" at random moments, and both characters had run-ins with the school cafeteria ladies—specifically Arnold, who referred to mayonnaise as "WHITE DEATH!" at the top of his lungs.
