Arminio (Biber)
''Arminio'' or ''Chi la Dura la Vince'' is an opera (" Dramma musicale") – and the earliest extant opera composed in Salzburg – in three acts about the Germanic military hero Arminius, and the only surviving opera composed by Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber, composed ca. 1690–1692 with an Italian libretto probably by Francesco Maria Raffaelini. Opera
Opera is a form of theatre in which music is a fundamental component and dramatic roles are taken by singers. Tiberius
Tiberius Julius Caesar Augustus (; 16 November 42 BC – 16 March AD 37) was the second Roman emperor. He reigned from AD 14 until 37, succeeding his stepfather, the first Roman emperor Augustus. Tiberius was born in Rome in 42 BC. His father was the politician Tiberius Claudius Nero and his mother was Livia Drusilla, who would eventually divorce his father, and marry the future-emperor Augustus in 38 BC. Hermann Und Thusnelda
"Hermann und Thusnelda" is a poem written in 1752 by Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock exalting the Cheruscan chieftain Arminius, whom Johannes Turmair and Martin Luther named '' Hermann'' in the 16th century, and his wife Thusnelda. The poem was set to music by Franz Schubert in 1815 ( 322). History Since the rediscovery of Tacitus's ''Germania'' in the 16th century, Germans have exalted the Germanic tribes as their direct ancestors. They especially praised German liberty defended by Arminius in 9 A.D. when three legions of the Roman Empire were defeated on Germanic soil, thus putting an end to Roman plans to subjugate Germania. ''Arminio'' ( HWV 36) is an opera composed by George Frideric Handel. The libretto is based on a libretto of the same name by Antonio Salvi, which had been set to music by Alessandro Scarlatti. It is a fictionalisation of events surrounding the Germanic leader Arminius, who defeated the Romans under Publius Quinctilius Varus at the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in AD 9, and his wife Thusnelda. The opera was performed for the first time at the Covent Garden Theatre on 12 January 1737. Barbara Schlick
Barbara Schlick (born 21 July 1943, Würzburg) is a German soprano who is particularly admired for interpretations of the concert literature of the baroque era. Career Schlick studied singing under at the Hochschule für Musik Würzburg and in Essen under Hilde Wesselmann. She later pursued further studies with Rudolf Piernay and Gisela Rohmert. Starting in 1966, Schlick began to appear throughout Europe as a soloist with Adolf Scherbaum's Baroque ensemble. Hermann Oswald is a German tenor in opera and concert. Oswald received his first musical training as a member of the Tölzer Knabenchor. Among his operatic roles were Monostatos in Mozart’s ''Zauberflöte'' under Achim Freyer in Schwetzingen and Strasbourg and Monteverdi's ''L'Orfeo'' under Ivor Bolton at the Bavarian State Opera. Bernhard Landauer (born 20 July 1970) is an Austrian countertenor in opera and concert, who is active internationally in both historically informed performance and contemporary music. Life and career Bernhard Landauer was born in Innsbruck. He was a soprano soloist with the Wilten Boys' Choir in his hometown, and then studied voice at the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna, with Helene Karusso and Kurt Equiluz.
