Armenian Diaspora
The Armenian diaspora refers to the communities of Armenians outside Armenia and other locations where Armenians are considered an indigenous population. Since antiquity, Armenians have established communities in many regions throughout the world. However, the modern Armenian diaspora was largely formed as a result of World War I, when the Armenian genocide committed by the Ottoman Empire forced Armenians living in their homeland to flee or risk being killed. Another wave of emigration started with the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Marie Paris Pişmiş de Recillas ( hy, Բարիզ Փիշմիշ, 30 January 1911 – 1 August 1999) was an Armenian-Mexican astronomer. Pişmiş was born Mari Sukiasian ( hy, Մարի Սուքիասեան) in 1911, in Ortaköy, Istanbul. She completed her high school studies at Üsküdar American Academy. In 1937, she became the first woman to get a Ph.D. from the Science Faculty of Istanbul University. Her advisor was Erwin Finlay Freundlich. Later, she went to Harvard University where she met her future husband Félix Recillas, a Mexican mathematician. They settled in Mexico, and she became the first professional astronomer in Mexico. According to Dorrit Hoffleit, "she is the one person most influential in establishing Mexico’s importance in astronomical education and research". Jacobo Harootian was an Armenian-Mexican general who participated in the Mexican Revolution. Early life He was probably born in Aleppo, Ottoman Empire to an Armenian family and spent most of his life in Zumpango del Río, Guerrero. Despite his wealth, he was a known benefactor who built roads that connected his own town with other local villages. Military career In 1913, he enrolled as a physician and then as a soldier for Victoriano Huerta's army. Rosa Gloria Chagoyán (; hy, Ռոզա Գլորիա Չագոյան); is a Mexican actress and singer of Armenian descent. Biography Chagoyán started her career as a radio host.
