Armash, Iraq
Armash is a village in Shekhan District, Nineveh Governorate of Iraq that falls on the main road that connects the cities of Duhok and Erbil. It is populated by Assyrians, who are mainly followers of the Chaldean Catholic Church. As of 2012, the population of the village is around 160 inhabitants according to the population count by Wijnand D. Langeraar and Richard C. Michael. History The village is first mentioned in a 9th century text by Toma Al-Merji, who writes that the village's Mar Afram monastery, which was standing along with another church until 1986, was extent in the 9th century. In 1961, about 45 families lived in the village, but many eventually fled. Prior to 1961 there were no schools in the village. Students from Armash and Azakh would walk to the town of Atroush (7 km away), where the nearest school was. The village was subject to destruction by the Ba'ath regime in 1987. Shekhan District
The Shekhan District (, ku, قەزای شێخان, Qeza Şêxan) is a district in the Nineveh Governorate with its capital at Ain Sifni. It is bordered by the Amadiya and Dahuk Districts of the Dahuk Governorate to the north, the Akre District to the east, Al-Hamdaniya District to the south, and the Tel Kaif District to the west. Baadre, considered the political capital of the Yazidis, is also in this district. History The Shekhan District was formed on December 16, 1924. Duhok
Duhok ( ku, دهۆک, translit=Dihok; ar, دهوك, Dahūk; syr, ܒܝܬ ܢܘܗܕܪܐ, Beth Nohadra) is a city in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. It's the capital city of Duhok Governorate. History The city's origin dates back to the Stone Age, and it became part of the Assyrian Empire, then the Babylonian Empire before it fell into the hands of Achaemenid Empire after the Fall of Babylon, and subsequently fell into the hands of Alexander the Great and the Romans. Erbil, also called Hawler (, ar, أربيل, Arbīl; syr, ܐܲܪܒܹܝܠ, Arbel), is the capital and most populated city in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. It lies in the Erbil Governorate. The following is a list of historical and contemporary Assyrian settlements in the Middle East. This list includes settlements of Assyrians from Southeastern Turkey who left their indigenous tribal districts in Hakkari (or the historical Hakkari region), Sirnak and Mardin province due to torment, violence and displacement by Ottomans and Kurds in the First World War. Many Assyrians from Urmia, Iran were also affected and as such have emigrated and settled in other towns. Resettling again occurred during the Simele massacre in northern Iraq, perpetrated by the Iraqi military coup in the 1930s, with many fleeing to northeastern Syria. Most modern resettlement is located in Iraq, Syria and Iran in the cities of Baghdad, Habbaniyah, Kirkuk, Duhok, Al-Hasakah, Tehran and Damascus.
