Armande Cassive
Louise-Armandine Duval (24 December 1867 – 8 March 1940), known professionally as Armande Cassive, was a French actress. Life and career Cassive was born in Paris, and made her early career in Ba-Ta-Clan opérette. In 1891 she played the role of Lisette in Hervé's opéra bouffe ''Le Petit Faust'' at the Théâtre de la Porte-Saint-Martin, and was promoted to share the lead role of Marguerite with Jeanne Granier. She moved to the Théâtre de la Gaité, where she replaced Juliette Simon-Girard, in ''Le Voyage de Suzette''. In 1892, she created roles in ''Le Pays de l'Or noir'' (The Land of Black Gold) and ''Le Talisman''. During the rest of decade she starred in opéras comiques and opérettes, and in 1899 was cast in a non-musical play, Georges Feydeau's farce '' La Dame de chez Maxim'' (The Lady from Maxim's) at the Théâtre des Nouveautés in the role of "la môme Crevette" (roughly translated as "the Shrimp kid"), a famous dancer from the Moulin-Rouge. Moulin-Rouge
Moulin Rouge (, ; ) is a cabaret in Paris, on Boulevard de Clichy, at Place Blanche, the intersection of, and terminus of Rue Blanche. In 1889, the Moulin Rouge was co-founded by Charles Zidler and Joseph Oller, who also owned the Olympia (Paris), Paris Olympia. The original venue was destroyed by fire in 1915. ''Chantecler'' is a verse play in four acts written by Edmond Rostand. The play is notable in that all the characters are farmyard animals including the main protagonist, a chanticleer, or rooster. The play centers on the theme of idealism and spiritual sincerity, as contrasted with cynicism and artificiality. Much of the play satirizes modernist artistic doctrines from Rostand's romanticist perspective. Conception and productions Rostand was inspired to write the play after exploring the farming countryside around his new home, Villa Arnaga, in the Basque Country of the French Pyrenees, where he had come to live for health reasons after the phenomenal success of ''Cyrano de Bergerac'' and ''L'Aiglon''. Edmond Eugène Alexis Rostand (, , ; 1 April 1868 – 2 December 1918) was a French poet and dramatist. He is associated with neo-romanticism and is known best for his 1897 play ''Cyrano de Bergerac''. Rostand's romantic plays contrasted with the naturalistic theatre popular during the late nineteenth century. Another of Rostand's works, ''Les Romanesques'' (1894), was adapted to the 1960 musical comedy ''The Fantasticks''. Early life Rostand was born in Marseille, France, into a wealthy and cultured Provençal family. His father was an economist, a poet who translated and edited the works of Catullus, and a member of the Marseille Academy and the Institut de France. Rostand studied literature, history, and philosophy at the Collège Stanislas in Paris, France. ''Je ne trompe pas mon mari!'' (I don't cheat on my husband!) is a three-act farce by Georges Feydeau and René Peter. It was Feydeau's last full-length play. Opening in Paris in 1914, it ran for 200 performances. The plot revolves round the love life of a well-known painter, with the other characters in various permutations around him. Background and first production By 1914 Feydeau had written, on his own or in collaboration with other playwrights, more than twenty full-length plays, mostly farces (for which he used the alternative French term "vaudevilles"). Several had enjoyed unusually long runs on the Paris stage. What is now one of his most popular plays, ''A Flea in Her Ear, La Puce à l'oreille'' (A Flea in Her Ear), had closed prematurely after 86 performances in 1907, following the sudden death of one of its stars, but its successor, ''Occupe-toi d'Amélie!''
