Arlington Peak (California)
Arlington Peak is a high peak within the Santa Ynez Mountains located north of Santa Barbara, California, adjacent to the south of La Cumbre Peak and to the southeast of Cathedral Peak. The name of the peak purportedly originated in 1889 from the staff of the Arlington Hotel who referred to the area comprising the three peaks as ''The Arlington Crags''. Arlington Peak was officially named in 2004 by the United States Board on Geographic Names. The peak is accessible via a ''"out and back"'' trail used for hiking and rock climbing, which is rated as difficult. There have been occasional incidents where hikers were injured and required evacuation. Santa Ynez Mountains
The Santa Ynez Mountains are a portion of the Transverse Ranges, part of the Pacific Coast Ranges of the west coast of North America. It is the westernmost range in the Transverse Ranges. The range is a large fault block of Cenozoic age created by the movements of the Santa Ynez Fault. A very narrow range, the Santa Ynez Mountains rise quickly on its north side and drops off equally dramatically along the range's south face along the Gaviota Coast. The Santa Ynez Mountains begin as a series of volcanic hills near Point Arguello, and gradually transitions eastward into a single, well-defined ridge extending from Gaviota Peak to Matilija Creek. The range is approximately contiguous with the Topatopa Mountains beyond to the east, which terminates abruptly at Sespe Creek. La Cumbre Peak
La Cumbre Peak is a peak in the Santa Ynez Mountains north of Santa Barbara, California and located within the Los Padres National Forest. Composed of boulders and slabs of the Matilija Sandstone amid groves of pine trees, it is the highest summit in proximity to the city. Adjacent to La Cumbre is Arlington Peak () and Cathedral Peak (). Other peaks within the Santa Ynez Range include Santa Ynez Peak, to the west, and Divide Peak, to the east. East Camino Cielo (originally known as ''Ridge Route'') was constructed between October 1930 and June 1931 as a single lane road that extended from San Marcos Pass to the summit of La Cumbre Peak. Arlington Hotel (Santa Barbara, California)
The Arlington Hotel was a historic hotel in Santa Barbara, California, United States. Opened in 1876, it was one of the grandest hotels in the West. The original building burned down on 15 August 1909, and a replacement hotel was completed in 1911 at a cost of over one and a half million dollars. This building suffered further misfortune when a strong earthquake devastated the town in 1925, and the hotel was left in ruins. History The Arlington Hotel was built in 1875 as the first luxury hotel in Santa Barbara. It occupied a plot on State Street, located between Sola Street and Victoria Street. It was a three-storey building set back from the road with a long veranda and many windows on the upper two floors. Matilija Sandstone
The Matilija Sandstone () is a sedimentary geologic unit of Eocene epoch in the Paleogene Period, found in Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties in Southern California. It consists of thick layers of sandstone, made up of grains of feldspar and quartz from a granitic source rock, interbedded with thin layers of siltstone and shale. Hard, massive, and exceptionally resistant to weathering, it forms the high rocky summits of the Santa Ynez Mountain range north of Santa Barbara, eastward into Ventura County.
