Searcy County ( ) is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 8,195. The county seat is Marshall. The county was formed December 13, 1838, from a portion of Marion County and named for Richard Searcy, the first clerk and judge in the Arkansas Territory. The city of Searcy, Arkansas, some 70 miles away, shares the name despite having never been part of Searcy County. The county is an alcohol prohibition or dry county. Generally the two-digit odd numbered highways run north–south with a few exceptions; and even-numbered two-digit state highways run east–west with a few exceptions. Arkansas has long had a stigma of poor roads, dating from the "Arkansas Roads Scandal" playing a prominent role in state politics through the 1920s and 1930s, periodic allegations of corruption, waste, and fraud, and a long-running struggle to adequately fund the operation, maintenance and expansion of a large highway system serving a rural state. Arkansas Highway 16
Highway 16 (AR 16, Ark. 16, and Hwy. 16) is an east–west state highway in Arkansas. The route begins in Siloam Springs at US Highway 412 (US 412) and Highway 59 and runs east through Fayetteville and the Ozark National Forest to US Highway 67 Business (US 67B) in Searcy. Highway 16 was created during the 1926 Arkansas state highway numbering, and today serves as a narrow, winding, 2-lane road except for overlaps of through Fayetteville. Much of the highway winds through the Ozarks, including the Ozark National Forest, where a portion of the highway is designated as an Arkansas Scenic Byway. Arkansas Highway 74 (AR 74 and Hwy. 74) is a series of state highways of total in Northwest and north central Arkansas and is divided into eight separate sections. Route description The westernmost section route begins in Devil's Den State Park at AR 170. The route winding out of the park heading east. AR 74 crosses I-49 at exit 45 before ending at US 71 in Winslow. A second segment begins at US 71 just north of Winslow and runs east approximately before becoming County Road 43 (CR 43). Section 3 begins at AR 16 in Elkins, running approximately before ending at US 412B in Huntsville. Gates-Helm Farm
The Gates-Helm Farm is a historic early homestead property in rural Searcy County, Arkansas. It is located on both sides of County Road 13, north of Snowball. The property includes a single-pen log house, and a single-pen log barn, both built c. 1870, and a wood frame double-pen house built around 1900. The log structures, located down a lane on the west side of the road, were built by Peter Gates not long after purchasing the land. The house, on the east side of the road, was built by William Helm, who had married one of Gates' daughters. The property exemplifies the evolution of vernacular architecture of the period. The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.
